You are designing Wowwee Robots 2009

What would you create if you were in charge? Just updates? Robosapien v3? Something completely new?

I'll start.

I would create a Roboquad-like robot that can use solar power if it is available. Like those old BEAM robots, it would be a photovore and seek out light. For additional fun, it would scurry for the nearest shadows if it was startled by a loud sound or made to "flinch" or whenever it went into scared mode. I would want it to to be very responsive to it's environment...

It might be also be fun to try to design one around those teeny, tiny laser projectors that are supposed to come out this year. Or one that used something like the A.L.I.C.E. chat robot engine.

Or even one like Robonova or I-sobot that was nice and fast and agile.

I would start working on some bug robots with 6 legs that can turn go forward backward. Respond to walls and sound. Can react to color. I would even see if it could walk up an inclined plane and possibly stairs.

waleed123 on April 16, 2008 11:36 AM

i would make a dragonfly v2 with 4 wings just like what gw jax is doing now

and black and red in colour

this is my design

CarlR on April 16, 2008 7:45 PM

I'd use the RS Media as a starting point, as a multi-media approach is essential - it just needs a net-connection too.

It must walk way better though, and be a lot quieter, too.  And the controller should be replaced with a cell-phone-like handset, making text-messaging the main means of communicating with the robot.  ('Driving' the robot is just plain daft.  They are NOT a radio-controlled car, but an automous thing.)

And it should have a recharging unit it can find itself, and not just to dock and recharge, but to dock and replace it's batteries, so it's not imobile for X hours out of X hours.

Nocturnal on April 17, 2008 6:56 AM

So your proposing essentially combining the RS Media with the Rovio?

MrScott on April 17, 2008 8:59 AM

An RSMedia torso on a rovio style base would pique my interest.

CarlR on April 17, 2008 11:28 PM

Nocturnal said: So your proposing essentially combining the RS Media with the Rovio?
Ummm - no?  Rovio doesn't walk, doesn't change it's on batteries and while I've only seen it on video, it doesn't sound too quiet, either.

Nocturnal on April 17, 2008 11:35 PM

True, it does however have a net connection, and a navigation system that allows it to locate its base station. The walking part would be why I said combining it with the RS Media.

Changing its own batteries would be problematic for a variety of reasons.

I reckon that's a great idea, as a robot that has to sit on a charger for hours is not a very practical robot.  Getting it so that it doesn't run its batteries down faster than it can charge them might be a bit difficult though.

altwolf on April 17, 2008 11:43 PM

Had a fun idea just now. A backpack accessory for RSv2.5 or RSmedia v2 that could hold a couple Bladestars. It would be cool if RSmedia or v2.5 or similar robot could control a Bladestar, launching it from it's backpack.
Perhaps it could even control one to dogfight you with! That would rock.

IF you could lick the problems associated with this, running the batteries down faster than you can charge them isn't really an issue, you just have multiple battery packs.

Nocturnal said: IF you could lick the problems associated with this, running the batteries down faster than you can charge them isn't really an issue, you just have multiple battery packs.

I wondered about multiple battery packs, but would't it require them all to be charging at once?  Otherwise you'd just have a stack of flat batteries with only one pack of them being charged at any one time.

As to licking the problems of swapping them, you've plenty of power at the wall to  power the mecanical side of things.  The robot itself could be switched off while it's happening, with the dock doing the actual swapping.

MrScott on April 18, 2008 7:42 AM

No, you wouldn't need to charge them all at once. You need enough capacity to charge to match the rate at which you draw down.

If it takes 2 hours to run down a pack, then you need the equivalent of a pack charged every 2 hours. If it takes 6 hours to charge a pack, you would need three chargers running to get the equivalent of a new pack charged every 2 hours.

1pm - Take battery from, and load battery in, charger A
3pm - Take battery from, and load battery in, charger B (charger A now 1/3 charged)
5pm - Take battery from, and load battery in, charger C (charger A now 2/3 charged)
7pm - Take battery from, and load battery in, charger A

repeat as needed

Of course, that assumes you need guaranteed 24x7 uptime.
If you, more realistically, need your robot for short periods (less than it takes to drain a battery) several times a day, then you can use the Rovio and Roomba style charging station for it to repeatedly top off the partially drained battery.

GWJax on April 18, 2008 4:23 PM

I like this idea of self replacing battries docking station thing. Another thing I'll have to think about. Hmmmmmm

RobosapienV2-4mem8 on April 19, 2008 2:27 AM

"So your proposing essentially combining the RS Media with the Rovio?"

Damn you Nocturnal, You have guessed what I was going to do with the Rovio + RsMedia or V2

GWJax on April 19, 2008 7:47 AM

lol 4mem8,
how about running a bot with a 2 battery pack setup only using one, when the bot needs more power have it go to recharge base. once there the base will switch the old battery out install the new one as a reserve. but once the bot comes to the base have it logicly switch power supplies before the dead battery is pulled. use the old style layout of the camrecorders battery that are pushed in to release the battery so the base can just grab it and swapp it it out. I have the picture in my head on how this is done but hard to explain it. Maybe down the line I'll make such a base.

RobosapienV2-4mem8 on April 19, 2008 8:10 AM

Lets start scheming now eh!!

GWJax on April 19, 2008 10:08 AM

Back to the topic, I would have an alien life form "Yes the little gray men with big black eyes" that would only have the bust and arms, Using the A.L.I.C.E protocal program that learns and have a camera in both eyes to track it enviroment and Identify you and other people and things with a life like voice and emotions, but make it a little qurkey and fun to interact with..

RobosapienV2-4mem8 on April 19, 2008 3:58 PM

That would be cool GW, I would second that that design. Nice.

GWJax on April 19, 2008 4:10 PM

once we finnish our projects, we can start that one... how about it 4mem8

RobosapienV2-4mem8 on April 19, 2008 5:05 PM

I'm game.

GWJax on April 19, 2008 6:09 PM

great we'll work out the details later after atleast one project is finnished.

RobosapienV2-4mem8 on April 19, 2008 6:40 PM

Agreed GW, Need to get my projects finished first and yours, these will take a bit of time. No hurry though.

dontknowdiddly on May 7, 2008 11:51 PM

Does anyone know anything about the wiring diagram on a wow wee elvis. I own a restaurant in Texas I have a theater booth with elvis inside (looks quite good actually) the only problem is the energy saving mode - he keeps going off if I do not hit the remote (which I do not have time for) any help would be helpful to disarm this feature.

RobosapienV2-4mem8 on May 8, 2008 3:24 AM

GW has ripped his apart to create Elvis, So he knows the wiring diagram really well.

GWJax on May 8, 2008 4:46 AM

Correction 4mem8, Elvis has already been created it is the Elvinator. hehe I know its a typo, lol Just had to put that one in. I left a message for him on another thread "will anyone buy an Elvis" he posted this same question twice so I not going to repeat my repeat my repeat my self........

xanxion on May 9, 2008 2:16 AM

That some interesting ideas. I was thinking the same about Rovio, i just wanted to intergrate Rovio + I-Que.
Rs media + Rovio is probably possible, but i think it would be much harder than with an i-que.

When i get my rovio, i'll try with the ique. If everything goes well, i would like to try something with the rovio + rsm.

Anyway. I had another idea;

Title: I-Calender
Features:
voice recognition
Text to Speech
Alarm sounds (alarm notification X days before event and on the day offcourse)
Mini keyboard
Clock
etc

or even:
Voice recording for the alarm. example:
Mic record = You say: "Meeting monday 12:30", when the alarm starts it would play your recorded voice / event

I would love such an pocket companion hehe. (i allways forgets)

Well just an idea anyways :-)

RobosapienV2-4mem8 on May 9, 2008 3:34 AM

Ah, your right, sorry of course it's Elvinator. Good spotting.

altwolf on May 11, 2008 8:09 PM

Take GW's A.L.I.C.E. empowered bust, and give it some internet access and Xanxion's text to speech, and you could have a cool/creepy bot.

For instance, imagine if it could speak and animate your friends Yahoo or MSn instant messages to you and animate itself off of keywords, like "No" or "yes" or emoticons... What if it had camera's in it's eyes for video conferencing and face tracking....And sound sensors/mics so you could talk back to it and it would "speech to text" it and send your replies back.

EEEk. Might be creeepy.

Eastercla on May 11, 2008 9:01 PM

I would like to make a v2/ rs media like bot with wheels so it can lay down and rolol around.

robodud on May 11, 2008 9:14 PM

i would have a rs media that had the hands of a v2 and a tail from a roboreptile and the hed of a v2.that would be coo.

GWJax on May 11, 2008 10:15 PM

what a cool idea artfolf, it would be like a charrtebot on steriodes. great thinking. Maybe the next on I do will have this on it or mabe 4mem8 will do it to his Elvis. You never know with him whats up his sleeve.
Jax

RobosapienV2-4mem8 on May 12, 2008 1:05 AM

He he he, I love being mysterious GW, I have a few things up my sleeve for the up and coming months, But as always some coding will let me down, Can't keep asking u to code for me on every bot I make. Unless u really like doing it!! Hopefully I can get some more time in the next week or so. Just reinstating my PC gear back into the lounge at present.

robodud on May 12, 2008 3:42 PM

DO YOU THINK THAT MY IDEA IS POSIBLE FOR A MOD?

MrScott on May 12, 2008 6:58 PM

No need to shout,fella.

Sounds relatively doable, RoboDud. The hands and head are easy enough, as the V2 and Media are quite similar. The tail wouldn't seem too difficult, either. Just mount the wagger in his butt, and hang the current tail from there.

Nocturnal on May 12, 2008 8:00 PM

The hands would be a bit tricky. There is a lot more in the RS Media's hands than there is in the V2's (speakers, buttons etc). If the mounting points for the fingers are the same (and its not something I have checked), you might be able to mount a V2's fingers in an RS Media's hands.

I'm curious enough to try it.

robodud on May 12, 2008 9:10 PM

so ummmmmmmmmmmmm is that a yes or no?

Nocturnal on May 12, 2008 9:17 PM

It is potentially possible, there are one or two things that may cause issues.

robodud on May 12, 2008 9:22 PM

cool

robodud on May 12, 2008 9:22 PM

cool
