I also like animals as much as I do robots so what the heck, I realize its geared for kids but surely Im not the only 43 year old working businessman that wants a Lion cub lol, right?

Elvis Animator Program

I am starting this thread to discuss my upcoming Elvis Animator program. This program will let you create and edit custom animations for Elvis, which you can then put on your modified cartridge to playback on the Elvis Alive! Animatronic bust. I am starting this thread because I am about half way through the major parts of the program, and am hoping to get some early feedback and suggestions for it. The Source code can be shared with anyone that knows how to program in VB, but I will be the main distribution point. So, I expect that anyone that gets the source and modifies it, does not attempt to package it and deploy it separately (at least until the status is release candidate, and then you can do whatever you want with the source code.) The program is being written in Visual Basic 6.0, which is a fairly obsolete language, but it all that I am familiar with right now for windows programming, except a little Delphi, for which I no longer have an IDE. I would definitely like some involvement from others seeking to port the program to other languages and working to make it as open platform...

Elvis has a crook in his neck!

Humble apologies for being the new guy already asking for help. We bought an Elvis at a Tuesday Morning retail store, and then bought the floor model at a discount because his neck is stuck to the left. This much I have established: I don't know what I am doing. The motor and 'screw' mechanism controlling the left-right head position does work in both directions when powered by a battery directly. The end-of-cycle switches for the neck movement all test okay. If the motor is driven to center and then reconnected, it will drive to the extreme left position and stay engaged briefly when Elvis is powered up. It does this every time consistently. Having the 'known good' Elvis should make comparison testing easy - if only I knew what I was doing. Any advise or insight is truly appreciated. Thank you!

Alive! Elvis: Appearance Mods

This thread will be about tips, tricks, and projects for modifying the appearance of your Alive! Elvis bust. Since this topic description will remain at the top, It will become an index to the topics discussed in the thread which I will try to keep updated, so check it out first. Feel free to bring some ideas in here or post pics and videos of any mods that you do. But, please, let's keep it about his appearance only. Topics such as cutting or modifying his hair, makeup, skin, chest, etc... all fit here as well as things like relocating his IR sensors to his shell, or placing the head on a body. I will be moving some information over here from the cartridge hacking thread about mods that I have done recently to change his appearance. Contents: 1. Removing the sideburns 2. Modifying the upper lip sneer 3. Relocating the IR Sensors/Losing the jacket 4. Removing the wig and hairline 5. Hair Installation method (GWJax)

Elvis Cartridge has been hacked (updated: Article is on the way)

The Wowwee Alive Elvis utilizes a cartridge which contains all of his songs and monologues. Opening the cartridge, we found that it contained a single IC. We looked up the datasheet for this IC and determined that it was a 32MB 3.3v NAND flash. Using the datasheet and a multimeter, we were able to determine the pinout of the cartridge connector. Knowing that xD and Smartmedia flash cards, typically used in cameras and MP3 players use a straight-through NAND flash interface, we compared the pinouts of the cards with the pinouts of the cartridge. We found that all needed signals were present to connect the cartridge directly to a USB xD/Smartmedia reader and dump the cartridge contents. What we found was a very pleasant surprise! The cartridge is formatted as a standard FAT16 volume viewable by Windows, Linux, Mac, etc.. There are 123 files on the cartridge which takes up about 26.5MB of the 32MB cartridge. The cartridge is not write protected and there is approximately 5MB free. First, we looked at the audio clips. The 8 Song titles, 8 Songs, 8 Karaoke versions of the songs, and 37 monologues are all regular MP3s with the file extension, *.dat. The...

Making a Chimp Alive Again

I got a (sick) chimp today. I often stop by a nearby surplus warehouse store to see what store stock has found it's way to their deeply discounted aisles. A Chimp that had obviously been deboxed, and resealed in just inner box, was on the shelf. It had the remote and the AC adapter. I passed it by one day a week ago. Today I picked it up. It was initially mostly dead. When switched on it would give a single audio "whoop", and remain inert after that. I poked around in the base and found nothing obviously wrong. I peeled back the wig on the back, removed the back of the skull, and got access to the main logic board. Nothing was obviously wrong there, either. I pulled and reseated some cables, and finally resorted to some pin probing with a screwdriver looking for a response. I was able to get some Chimp audio, and some programmed movement sequences. By luck or design, the little buggar reset itself, and now seems to be mostly functional. It listens to the remote, tracks your hand. My thought is to adapt it for my annual Halloween display. Not sure whether it will...

Custom Controller for Elvis?

Late to the party, but just cracked open my Elvis head. The ICESDA, ICESCK, and ICE lines on the J22 connector on the main board are for an I2C (3 wire) interface to the Analog to Digitial converter (Sonix SNAD01A) Which is an 8 channel 10-BIT ADC chip. All of the motor pots are connected to this. There is one in the head and one on the main board. Any custom controller will need to be able to either communicate with this or replace it with something else. There is a 512K Flash chip in the center of the controller. I will need to get an adapter for my eeprom programmer to dump the code. I imagine it is essentially a bootloader with the basic functions and some basic phrases you hear when you do not have a cart inserted. The main processor is a sunplus chip on a COB board on the bottom side of the main board. All connections have huge test pads which would be awesome if we actually knew anything about it! There is also a very small grouping of three pins that look suspiciously like a serial port (TX, RX, and GND) I don't have...
