Am sorry if this sounds stupid, or maybe i am missing out on something obvious I decided to replace the winds on my dragonfly but when am trying to reattch the second set of wings, I am not ble to properly fix the wing to the hook at the back Each wing has two holes at the back for attaching but there is only 1 hook..what am I missing then? Also, on the front side, do I need to fix the wings straight or crossed? In other words, while attaching the 1st wing, should I attach both the rods to the two ends of the same pin , or is it the other way round, i.e. 1 rod to the 1st pin, while the other rod goes to the other pin

dragonfly climbing and diving?

Ok.. so I enjoy the dragonfly more than I thought I would. Probably more so than most of the other robots in my collection (shhh! don't let them know that!) My question is, when I'm flying it (I haven't tried the tail ribbon yet - I've never seen a dragonfly with a ribbon hanging off his....) even on the calmest of days, it will climb a little then dive sharply. Usually more so than the amount that it climbed so that it winds up on the ground pretty quickly. It will oscillate like this the entire time that I'm flying it. Only on one one or two occasions was I able to get it to fly for a good long time. Any idea how I can correct this climb-dive problem? Flying lessons? Dragonfly modifications? Also, while I'm on the subject - I know that it is meant to fly indoors, but short of my having access to a gymnasium, I don't see that happening. Is the BladeStar a better candidate for outdoor flying? I may have to come across one of those too!

I knew that waiting would pay off! For me, $50 was way too much for a toy I'd probably play with for a week before I put it back in the box. Then I saw W@l-M@rt had it on clearance for $25. Not bad, but still too rich for my cheap blood :) I've been checking every week and they finally reduced the DragonFly to $10. FIgured it wasn't going to go any lower than that, so I snatched one up. I can see where it's designed for indoor flying, but my cluttered shop does not allow for flying something like that around. I took it outside today and, although the slight breeze that we had gave the little fella an erratic flight pattern, I loved it! I'm sure I won't play with it long (short attention span and all), but it's still fun nonetheless!

Dive-bomb after wing replacement

After a few days flying my new dragonfly, I finally broke one of the wing rods and had to install the back-up pair. After doing so, however, I've got some major issues getting the dragonfly to fly properly. It now wants to nose-dive immediately. Actually, if you just hold the dragonfly and start flapping its wings it tries to turn down, under your hand. It's like the "lift" has been reversed.I tried swapping the wings left and right but had the same result. The checked that the rods are securely seated in their holes as suggested in other threads here on the forum. I'm sure it's a user error, but I'm not quite sure what else to try at this point. Any suggests would be much appreciated. I miss flying him - I was just starting to really get the hang of it! cheers, David

I was playing my dragonfly after my chuch service was over. The church is right beside the road. I had the dragonfly about thirty feet in the air and a big guest of wind caught it. It made the dragonfly flop upside down and it feel about 5 feet over the road. At this point, I was nervous because a car was comming its way. I then decided the only way it would live is if I tried to fly it under the car. The dragonfly made it. It went under the car, hit the under side of it, rolled a little bit and its wing got ran over. It lived. Not even the wing was broken in this crash. I was surprised. Wow Wee created these dragonflies very well. They dont break very easily. One reason why I reccomend it to people that like flying toys. It is tough. The result of this was just a little bit of the paint on the nose was chipped off. None of the body was gone. The wing had motor oil all over it. Again, not a big deal. I cleaned it off and started to fly it again. AWAY FROM THE...

Well I just thought I would start to share to you all what I have been doing for the past few monhs with my DF's. Its almost ready and I think its time to share to you all what it is. I will only have one photo from the inside so you can see what It's goingt to be. All other info will trickle in for you. I have been doing some research and looking at what a dragonfly really looks like and so what I found out is that the WowWee 's Df only have 2 wings one on top and one on the bottom. Well A Dragonfly does have 4 wings and they are all on top so why not make a DF with 4 wings on top and 4 on the bottom, Hmmmm A lot more lift I say. and as the tail goes you always well most of the time they have 2 tails while ours have 1. I have tested and tested the prototype and found that I could use this to my advantage. I still have to make the new outer body .So hacking away I did, and now for the uncompleted NEW DF...

Mechanical Dragonfly - "Anax Imperator Machina"

We had seen a similar type of model dragonfly in a previous post , a solar-powered model that didn't actually fly. There's another, more "gilded" dragonfly, available for a scant $15,000, via JesseDanger, a seller on Etsy . It's called the "Anax Imperator Machina," or loosely translated to "The Emperor Dragonfly Machine," according to some Google searching. (If anyone here is an expert on Latin, please chime in, here's some of what I found. ) What's particularly intriguing about this work of art, at least to me, is that it's mechanical, employing a system of gears. I'm fascinated with mechanical watches and have a small collection of my own... although it's nothing compared to the collections of some (presumably very wealthy) folks , it's a start! That being said, I'd love to have a mechanical dragonfly of my own, but $15,000 is a little steep :) (Via BoingBoing)

I've attempted to trim down one of my Dragonflies to see if I could make a smaller, more indoor friendly version. I've had partial success. My smallfly is not tremendously smaller than the original DF but it is maybe 2/3 the size. And it's not any more indoor friendly than a regular DF, but it's been fun trying to make it. Took a bit of fine tuning but finally got it flying decent. In fact, to my surprise it does indeed fly very well. I started by removing the body and trimming down the weight by removing excess parts of the plastic frame. I snipped the tail carbon fiber rod in half and moved the tail rotor closer to the body. I initially started by just cutting down the original wings but I cut too much mylar away and they didn't have the needed lift. So I removed the carbon fiber rods from them and simply used some mylar gift wrap (it was the only mylar I had handy) to make my own wings. I was quite surprised that my first try at making my own wings worked so well. As an afterthought I just added a white spotlight type...

I don't currently own either a DragonFly, or a BladeStar, but am considering getting a flyer of some sort. I've been following along with with the trials and tribulations of folks learning to fly their DragonFlys and trying out the new BladeStars. If you were going to buy just one, would it be $25 for a DragonFly, or $50 for a BladeStar? Things coloring my thoughts... Dragonflys are flyable inside and outside. BladeStars are advertised as indoor only. DragonFlys are currently half the price of BladeStars BladeStars seem to be better for a small space (dragonflys seem to need more room) So, what are the opinions of those that own both? What are the pros and cons?

On behalf of WowWee, we'd like to extend a challenge to anyone who has captured their FlyTech Dragonfly being snatched up in mid-air by surprise! But first, some background information... You may or may not have heard about poor Danny McGorry's electronic insect. A local red-tailed hawk from his town in Long Island simply couldn't hold back on swooping down on his new holiday toy, and attacked his Dragonfly. I guess it was the "Hawk that stole Christmas!" Turns out, we heard from WowWee that they have been receiving a number of service calls about this same issue - there have been several "Dragonfly Vs. Hawk" incidents! How to Enter the FlyTech Dragonfly VS. Hawk Challenge We would love to see members of our community submit their "Hawk VS. Dragonfly" videos. And don't worry, if you did manage to catch the event on film, WowWee will be happy to replace your Dragonfly with a brand new one. All you need to do is send your video submission to videos@robocommunity.com. You can utilize a service such as YouSendIt to do this. Videos must be sent directly to this email address to qualify.

I just got the Yellow Hornet version of the Dragonfly from Target. Whenever I try to fly it, it seems to try and climb too quickly going nearly vertical then it dives forward, usually hitting the floor. It does this wether the tail ribbon is on or not. I've tried just holding the throttle at various positions other than full out and it still does this to some degree. So before I start trying to mod it has anyone else had this problem? It almost seems to be a weight distribution issue.

Looks like the laws of nature have taken over in this particular case. The reigning king of the skies, the red-tailed hawk, decided to snatch up 5th grader Danny McGorry's FlyTech Dragonfly. This isn't the first time a wild animal has attacked the toy, either - WowWee reportedly has had multiple cases of this. So, next time you're flying your favorite ornithopter out in the wilderness, make sure that you keep your eagle eye out for predators... Read more over at Gizmodo !
