Hello

I'm new here. I'm a developer at ewe-software. I owned a new Rovio and just for fun I coded my own remote control software for the Rovio robot. I think the Rovio hardware can do more than the build in interface supports. I included some features like full screen view, gained push to talk audio or animated blue lights. I named it "RovioDirect" and its freeware for you. So feel free to test it and let me know what you think. I placed it in the download area or follow this link:
http://www.ewe-software.com/roviodirect

Kind regards
Andreas

This program is awesome! Great job, i saw that you might have controls for the blue lights on there but i cannot find how to activate or turn them off in the program. Is it possible with this program? I am more interested because i am thinking of adding other mechanical parts to the rovio and using the control of the lights to control the new parts (if this makes any sense). but great program though lots of functions, i especially like that i can choose the camera angle as oppose the preset settings

Update: i found it in the config file. My next question is, is it possible to assign buttons or commands with each desirable sequence of light? thanks

I liked this alot, great job!

Had problems(5.0), updated to latest firmware (5.3), now works fine.

One issue tough, cant play voice recorded with space, it just makes noise. Can hear my voice a little in the noise.
Prerecorded sounds work great.

Hello
Thanks a lot. To take control over the blue lights it is currently only possible with editing the config.ini and restarting the program. But I will see (with version 1.1) to integrate a control panel for toggling the blue lights while in runtime - with keys or mouse clicks. But currently I'm searching a solution for turning off the blue lights when the robot is on dock. I think additional hardware makes sense when it can be controlled in this state also.

When your own voice is not playing correctly on the robot speaker and precompiled sound does, I think there is a problem with the recording from the microphone. Check by the "Speaking"-"Start Windows audio record mixer" menu that your microphone is selected. If you are sure that the microphone is used for recording, I think only the soundcard drivers can be a possible reason also, maybe try to update this. Hope this helps.
Kind regards

I will look forward 1.1 when you have it up. Please make sure you update and let us know. I wish i knew a little bit of programing to do it myself, but sadly i do not. The sound is ok for me, it gets a little fuzzy (probably bad mic) but the precompile sounds are very clear.

There is one problem and i am wondering if upgrading to firmware 5.3 would solve it but i get more video lag using the program than using firefox under the same video settings. So i've resorted to using the program to move, but firefox to view the video itself. Thanks again

In my case the video didnt work in 5.0, and flawless in 5.3
They have added better VLC support in 5.3.

As for my problem, the sound works well both ways in IE8, but i will check for newer driver and give it a try, thanks for fast reply :)

If your audio video stream is instable, try to raise the stream cache buffer in the config.ini of RovioDirect. Search for StreamCaching=100 and replace it to e.g. StreamCaching=250. Higher values here will give the stream more stability but also it give a delay in the feedback of the robot.

Great rogram but having big problems with it. Sometimes the video goes and get the image on screen, but most of the time it just a black screen, says sycronising with the arm going up, all the info on screen says loading battery then nohing, just a blank screen.

As I said sometimes it works and when it does, works great. I am using XP servie pack 3 and using the latest beta firmware on my Rovio.

Also I notice often the blue lights are out except the front ones. I guess this is a battery low warning as it only seems to happen when battery is running low.

Open the config.ini file of RovioDirect and try to raise the stream cache buffer. Search for StreamCaching=100 and replace it to e.g. StreamCaching=250. Higher values here will give the stream more stability but also it give a delay in the feedback of the robot. If this does not help, try to set the stream and cam values to the follow config. Hope it helps:

'Stream
StreamActive=1 'Activate stream functionality
StreamCaching=250 'Streamcaching in ms (100=Lan 250=Inet)
CamResolution=1 '3=640x480 (0-3)
CamCompression=0 '2=Quality (0-2)
CamFramerate=12 'Framerate (2-32)

Did not fix the problem. I had it. showing once. I get the message on the bottom, saying loaded and ready, get sound and still blank screen.

Sometimes it takes some seconds (up to 15) until the av stream is established. But when the stream never starts... hmm, sorry I don't know.

No need for a new computer unless I want to play games? but use my Xbox360 and PS3 for gaming anyway. An older computer for me has many advantages. But will eventually upgrade, but continue to have backwards compatiblity by having the HDD setup as duel boot.

Anyway got Roviodirect going now. Set the connection speed to max and fixes the problem.

I installed this soft but I cannot connect with my Rovio. The point is my Rovio is in Ireland and I am in Madrid so I only connect with it via Internet. I am using a URL like this "XXXX.dyndns.org:8080" and I can drive it with Explorer or Firefox. But, it is impossible to connect with it using RovioDirect.

I edited the INI write down the "XXX.dyndns.org:8080" in the IP line and 8080 in the port line... is it OK? Thanks

Try using this.

When I make changes to the config.ini file, the changes are saved in the file, but  the software doesn't seem to read any of the changes.  I change some of the conditions from 0 to 1 and change some of the levels for speakers and mic within the parameters given, but the software seems to ignore it.  I also can't get the blue led animations to work.

Basically, all of the changes I make to the config are ignored by the software.  I'm running Vista with firmware 5.03 on Rovio.  Can anyone help?

February 21, 2010 3:35 AM

Andreas, if you update the program, for the next version, please, can you contemplate, when pick on show navigation, will be great, this option be opened in a new windows form then asssociate a background picture with the truetrack beacon number.
The config options should can be, room size, acording the background size, and something like, truetrack numer 1.- select room scheme, truetrack number 2.-room scheme...

Regards.

Hello,

I installed Rovio Direct (on SEVEN) and then I upgraded my Rovio to the latest version (v5.03). I did not found install instructions or readme file. So, I only changed the first lines of the config.ini file : I updated my IP address, my User name and my password. I considered that all parameters should be fine as there are

February 23, 2010 5:16 PM

Hello.
@JohnnyTV
With Vista, dont open the config.ini file directly. Vista gives you a shadow copy of this file. Use the shortcut to "config.ini" by pressing startbutton+programms+roviodirect in the taskbar. If this does not help, start roviodirect.exe with the "-config" command or try start as administrator.
@Paranosh
Good idea. I will implement background pictures for the nav area and showing the room number in next version.
@CR95
Also set StreamCaching to "250" in case you have problems to get a stable audio video stream.

Andreas,

My previous mail was cut off. I was explaining that I cannot connect to Rovio (after setting correct IP, user name and password in ini file). Let me add that I am connecting from my inside LAN with a SEVEN PC and also that connexion is fine with ROVIO software.

Error is "run time error 1. Sorry..." just after connexion step (green line in the bottom).

Thanks if you could provide an idea for finding what is happening,

CR95

Same problem. Using a local IP address it works fine. But using an external IP address, through the router creates errors.

February 24, 2010 6:33 PM

Andreas,

Thanks for the tip. I guess I was trying to change the config the hard way (wrong way).

It seems like this discussion has become a tech support forum for your software. Before I ask for any more help, I want to say that you've done a fantastic job making roviodirect. It runs faster and smoother than anything else I've tried.

The only problem that remains is the outbound audio stream. The sound effects and push-to-talk are coming out as loud garbled static. I can hear the speech mixed into the static and it sounds like it is coming through at the wrong sampling rate (i.e. the speech is high-pitched and fast). Do you have any thoughts?

February 25, 2010 10:08 AM

Excellent application! I'd like to have a brightness gain like what is available with other apps. Is this something you think you might be able to add in the future?

February 26, 2010 8:55 AM

Thanks for making so much stuff available in the ini. Here's a fun animation I figured out for the lights if anyone wants it. It makes the front two and back two lights stay on and the middle ones alternate. 3D2F
