Hello all,

First time on the forum - I did a quick search and didn't find any threads about the Dasatech Genibo QD so I'm making one now.  Anyway, I'm sure you have heard about the discontinued AIBO in one way or another, but I'm happy to say that GENIBO is the new AIBO!

Genibo QD

In summary, Genibo is an autonomous pet robot, similar to the Sony ERS-7 however with quite a few notable improvements:

- 1.3MP camera in Genibo vs 0.35MP camera in the AIBO.
- Touch Sensors on the Head, Back and Flank allow physical interaction with Genibo.
- Servos are more powerful enabling Genibo to perform movements that would be impossible for AIBO.
- Has 3 color, 31 LED eyes which can display not only emotions, but alphanumeric characters.

There are a few key areas which Genibo currently is lacking in which from the sounds of it Dasatech is working on (either for the current QD model or for a future model).

- Ball/toy detection and tracking (99% sure this is not currently in firmware).
- No autocharging (aka: seek and charge itself when battery is low).
- No automatic mouth movement.

Anyway, the Genibo has been a hit in Dasatech's home country (Korea) and has only recently been imported into other parts of the world (UK/USA).  If you are interested in purchasing the Genibo QD, here are a few links:

RoboToys: www.robotoys.com
(located in Van Nuys, CA)

Star-Robots: www.star-robots.com
(located in UK)

For myself, I plan on buying my own Genibo this week and will be providing a ton of photos & video in the weeks to come.  For more Genibo related information & links, feel free to hit up the Genibo Flickr group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/Genibo.

Nice,

I saw these a while ago. From your videos they have nice smooth movement. It does remind me of the I-Cybie (more advanced of course)

Would love one but can't really see myself spending 1200 pounds uk on one
(if money was no object I would get a few!!)

I'm extremely disappointed with genibo. It's like an expensive remote control robot. All it does is sits around waiting for a voice command to do something. In the manual is says he loves to explore, but I have never seen that happen. His obstacle avoidance is not great. When he walks into something he just makes that silly sound then whimpers and then does it again... over and over.

If I don't give him a voice command every single time he asks for it he makes a pop sound and whimpers, then sits there asking another question... again and again.

Wow what a waste of money

Well as it turns out Genibo is a huge waste of money. I would compare him to an i-cybie rather than an aibo. I've written a full (and final) review on my blog http://mygenibo.com/?p=161

That's a real disappointment to me!  I was hoping for the next Aibo.  Rats!

In the meantime, you can get a nearly new I-Cybie on eBay for between $50 and $100 dollars.  An incredible value really.

Hacking I-Cybie in creative ways, building on the fine work that has already been done, would be a great project.  Something I intend to pursue.

Has anyone done an autopsy of Genibo, taken it apart and identified the components?
