Hi,

I've been looking into entry level kits that will allow me to learn how to build and program my own designs, and at the same time won't cost me too much.

Now I narrowed it down to 2 choices [but of course I'm open to suggestion]

-lego mindstorms NXT - http://mindstorms.lego.com/eng/Egypt_dest/Default.aspx

this looks pretty cool. unfortunately, all my legos got lost somewhere so I don't have a huge amount of building blocks, but that is easily fixed. I was all but about toi run to the store when i found this:

- robotis bioloid - http://www.trossenrobotics.com/c/robot-systems-bioloid-kits.aspx

now this looks even cooler! sleek design, looks more like a real robot then a bunch of legos moving around, and the beginner kit kosts about the same as the mindstorms set.

 Now for the questions:

the bioloid kit [the beginner one, the others are too expensive for me at this point] is limited in comparison to the bigger kits. most of the really great bots you find videos of are made with these [the biped for example] is there anyone who owns the starter kit and can tell me if it's worth it to get it? I'd be gutted if it turns out I bought the "wrong" product, and should've saved up for a more complete kit. on the other hand, it seems you can buy all the servos and frames you need to expand the basic set, but of course at a price.

is there anyone on the forum who owns the kit and is willing to give me a comparison of the lego vs the bioloid kits? Right now I don't really know which way to go, and I don't want to spend a lot of cash on something that doesn't deliver.

thanks in advance

I don't have the bioloid kit, so I can't answer your question of comparison. The best I can do is tell you that I don't have the bioloid kit because I can't afford the $900 version. The cheap (beginner) kit just doesn't look like it'd get very far before I'd be even more bummed I didn't save longer for the bigger kit.

Given the similarity in price, I'd say the Lego kit would provide more "bang for the buck". It's also easier (and sometimes cheaper) to add more legos to the mindstorms. Just a trip to wally-world or toys-r-us for more robot parts.

Just my 0.15 kronor

Watch out, don't step in the anthropomorphization.

yea thats exactly what i'm afraid of. buying a kit for a [for my budget] hefty price and finding out after a few weeks or months that i need to "upgrade" and still buy about 500 euros worth of even more bits and pieces to be able to build something worth it.

legos galore on the other hand, and of course the full freedom to build exactly what you want without any restrictions in parts and such.

thanks for the answer, you just helped me decide on this one :]
