Hi guys,

I'm a bit unsure how to accomplish this. I would like to have Rovio drive a path around the room, taking (and e-mailing, if possible) pictures of certain locations, ie. the dogs area, kitchen, office room etc.

It would be nice if it can go the route once an hour or something and then automatically go back to charge when necessary - and afterwards out on the route again.

I'm not sure all of the above is possible, but which is and how do I set it up?

Thanks :)

Hi mrmiata,

Whenever you want Rovio to go on a recorded path you must do it through the interface. If you want Rovio to do the recorded route on the hour you have to get on Rovio's interface on the hour and activate the command of the recorded path yourself.

Yeah, that's what I thought. But I can't seem to figure out exactly how to use the "path" thingy. I can "record a path", but when it's done with the path, doesn't it just stand there doing nothing, nothing the battery is about to die and it then goes home to rechage?

And, is it possible to have it take pictures on the route?

If you record a path without recording Rovio going back to its charging dock, then yes, it will remain idle until the batteries are almost totally depleted and then will return home (charging dock) on its own, as long as you previously saved the home location.

If you want to know if the camera can take pictures on a recorded path:

Record a path and take pictures while you are recording the path, then playback the path to see if it takes pictures on its own; if it doesn't then it's not possible.

NOTE:
Do not click the STOP command while recording a path. This will reset the record function and Rovio will not save the path.

Got it, trial & error pretty much, thanks :)

It's supposed to be able to take a photo as saved in a path. Same with head position and light on/off.

Watch out, don't step in the anthropomorphization.

Great, thanks!

I finally got back to play a bit more with Rovio.

And the big question is - how do you tell Rovio to go home and dock, while recording a path? You can't click the "home" button, it will just tell you to stop recording first.

And it's impossible to hit the docking station manually (also because I'm controlling it from the other room). But I managed to get it almost up, and then I just lifted it an inch myself so it was docked (status "docked"), saved the path. Tried to run it, and it failed miserable at docking by itself - it doesn't raise it's head to find out exactly where it's home is, I guess it's only navigating by the northstar.

Any advise would help, thanks :)

You could step out of the room and guide Rovio manually to the dock with a wireless keyboard. For keyboard commands refer to page 25 of the user manual under direction arrows. You could also use a Nintendo Wii Remote (WiiMote) http://www.robodance.com/rovio-wiimote.php

I tried, but I can't get it to dock. I managed to back up into the dock just fine, but when playing back the route it's just driving around the dock, I don't think it knows that it has to back up into it, I think it will just aim to hit the position that it's supposed to be in, no matter what direction it's pointing.

Well, let's hope for next christmas there'll be a killer firmware with motion detector and scheduled roaming, so it will work as a home security'ish robot :D
