I visited the Disney shopping website to check on the status of the Ultimate Wall-e, and to my surprise even the pre-order was gone, replaced by a Disney store exclusive I/R control Wall-e and 3 mini I/R robots.  (The shipping date for the pre-order is a week past.) What happened?

Edit: On the Toys R Us website, the Ultimate Wall-e is listed as "Temporarliy Not Available Online".  Ouch.

It looks like the final lineup of Wall-e robots is:

U-command Wall-e

i-dance Wall-e

Wired control Wall-e & EVE

Interactive Wall-e & EVE

Disney store exclusives:

I/R control Wall-e & EVE

Mini I/R control Wall-e, EVE, and M-O

I almost hate to say this ('cause I want one and don't want the next batch to sell out ;-), but I emailed Thinkway, and their customer service told me they'd be shipping more units in the New Year (which is now), and to check DisneyShopping.com in February.

Then I asked them if there'd be anything different about the model--enhancements and such. Still waiting to hear about that.

Has anyone else noticed that the Ultimate wall-e's gears sound REALLY loud and somewhat annoying?
Maybe I am spoiled on my Pleos gears.
Is there anyway to maybe open up wall-e and line his plastic shell with a sound dampening material. Do you think that would work?
Maybe upgrading his motors to brushless ones?
More lubrication on the gears perhaps?
Ideas anyone?

There is a lot of empty space in Wall-E so you should be able to add something.  But,  unlike Pleo that is trrying to mimic a living being so the gear noise needed to be muted.  Wall-E is a mobile trash compacter which wouldn't need to be designed for quite running.

Well, I got a call back from Thinkway Toys(after five days from leaving a message) and spoke to a woman who spoke English, but with a THICK oriental/Asian accent. I was supposed to be hearing back from someone who could answer my questions about batteries and charging problems, but the woman I spoke to knew no more about the electronics or technical stuff than I do.

But, she IS sending me a new battery and charger for Wall-e.

Now, let me ask you guys something...

Since he hasn't worked very much since a couple of days after Christmas, the kids have been getting antsy to play with him. I mentioned earlier that I have my old Tamiya electric race car and some 7.2V batteries that go along with it. These are "racing" batteries that have more output to them, but they're still 7.2V

I charged one up and started Wall-e up and everything worked fine. But only after about five or six minutes of using him, his power almost immediately diminished down to nothing, which is the same thing that was happening before, but we only got about one minute of use out of him.

He operates wonderfully, but then he suddenly loses ALL his power, without any delayed loss of power.

What's going on inside our little Wall-e, that's making him lose his juice so fast? I didn't spend just under $300 for five minutes of play. The kids are getting just as frustrated as I am.

And yes... He IS quite noisy.

January 3, 2009 4:54 PM

To me it sounds like a short in the wiring that is causing the batteries to drain quickly and if you feel the battery it would be hot. The amount of current should not matter as long as the voltage is set for 7.2V. If its not a short in the wires some where then the voltage regulator inside of the Wall-E is defective and needs repair. I wish I could help you more but I do not have that Wall-E YET.

Great can't wait for the Pics, I would say about your avatar photo almost yes as a robot but it's still a R/C unit but if you give him some sort of MCU and a program then yes I would consider it as a robot, but there are different options to this with other members as what is or is not a robot. We have a thread that talks about this some where and I know Mr.Scott can direct you to it like he always does.hehehe

#1 on the list is GW's own thread on the topic.

Yes, I knew you'd appreciate the fact that the simple search I used popped the thread you started to the top of the list.

I'm not buying into the "King" thing, though. The ability to use "Search" is a poor criteria for granting royal status.

It's not like the Search function is hard to use. I don't know what Capable Networks is using behind the scenes to index their threads and articles, but the search function is very speedy. If at first you don't succeed, search on another keyword.

As for Davros, the character himself is more rightly called a Cyborg, rather than a robot. Even the accursed Daleks are cyborgs, not robots.

The particular Davros toy would need some programmability or autonomy to be considered a robot by my definition of the word. I'm not familiar with that particular toy, so I cannot say whether it would qualify.

OK Mr Scott if you don't by the KING status then just look and see who is ranked #1 on the site, hummm that would be YOU!! so you are the KING of the site in my books. But just because I'm #2 at the time does not make me your Queen hahaha

People yearn after this robotic dream, but you can't strip your life of all meaning, emotion and feeling and expect to function.

I still say the more accurate assessment of my role is that of Janitor.

I've begun training my new assistant.

Only if you want to. There's certainly no standard, or requirement, for what your avatar is, other than something suitable for viewing by all ages.

GW's, and my, avatar are both variations on cyborgs.  The chief difference being that the Dalek is an organic brain with a mechanical exoskeleton, while the Terminator is a mechanical brain with an organic coating over the endoskeleton.

I took apart my Wall-E again to look at the MP3 3.5mm jack.  And as I said in my earlier post it looks like it doubles as some type of data port as well, because it has more than the necessary three wires to do audio.  I know in the original specs said USB connection, but there are no USB connections on the bot.  Also the back piece was the only component that didn't use phillips screws.  It used 4 triangular screws to keep you out.  Anyways I took a picture of the port - any thoughts?

January 12, 2009 3:45 PM

I believe that it is not a dataport, rather, the insertion of the minijack closes (or opens) some contact that the logic board uses to divert the audio signal from the onboard sound system to the MP3.

Or could it be that this is the MP3 IN port, for hooking up an iPod or the like? So when a lead is plugged in, it stops Wall-E from making his own sounds?

Just a thought.
