Hey I have never modded before and I would like to know what simple things I can do to him and have some instructions how to do it.  I am sort of afraid to hurt him.  Any suggestions?

P.S.  100$ GW Jax is first poster.

Easiest first mod would be an LED swap out, to make it more colorful. There are details here in the community.

Painting his IR scanners would interfere with the IR signal if I understand what your saying. Thank you MrScott I might try that.

would moding his front animation light be harder or easier?

I am not talking about painting anything. I am talking about opening the case, removing the existing LEDs, and installing ones of a different color.

Read the referenced threads for all the gory details.

If you are not up for that, and are looking for some simple cosmetic changes, you might consider painting some contrasting colors. You'd use paper and tape to mask off the moving joints and sensors, then use paint that is appropriate for use on the styrene plastic. The Krylon "Fusion" paint is designed to bond with plastic.

You'd want to wipe down the plastic surfaces to clean them before painting. You also might want to use some fine grit sandpaper, or steel wool, to buff the gloss off the plastic surface before painting.

MrScott I thought you would think I was talking to you. Ou said I should paint the IR sensors. I knew what you were talking about. I wasn't planning on painting anything. Do his screws use a phillips head?

You misread my post. My initial post suggested you swap out LEDS to make the RoboQuad more colorful. There was no mention of paint. I never would recommend anybody paint sensors.

Of course I thought you were talking to me. There's nobody else in this thread at this time.

The best way to determine which of your tools fits the RoboQuad best is to try them.

No can't you see the thing that says View Unverified member's comment? Maybe only I can. Well I was talking to him. I know what you were talking about. you were saying to open him up and changing the bulb.

Yes. My mistake, those darned unverified replies are too easy to skip over.

I attributed the "Ou said" as a mistyped "You said".

Yes some new feature you guys added. Whats wrong with just plain out showing it?

It allows people who do not have an account to post. I cant say why they then hide that post (seem a bit self defeating to me), but I'm sure there is a reason, and who knows, Peter R may pop up with an explanation.

Darn it I just realized I lost the bet I made.

Is there any way to just pull out roboquads animation light between his two front legs without opening him up?

Not unless you happen to be telekinetic. If you look in the photo bellow, you will notice the mounting that holds the LED is screwed in place.

As an aside, the "hidden" posts are from unverified folks who have an account, but who have not replied to the verification e-mail. That verification process is intended to confirm that the e-mail address provided during registration is legitimate.

My understanding is that it is a spam reduction mechanism.
My recommendation was that they not allow posting until the account is verified, but Capable Networks chose another path.

Ahhh, I see, you can't actually post without an account. Its just a "subtle" attempt to get people to register (the reply box when not logged in, not the hidden posts).

I agree with the not being able to post until registered, less problems, and for most people, the registration email (if sent immediately) should arrive within a few minutes.

Well sadly I'm not telekinetic. That would be cool though. I could probably do this I just don't want to open the 18 screws and possibly end up messing up the circuitry. I'll think about it.

It's surprising Jax still hasn't posted in this thread.

Well sorry bg for you losing your bet for $100.00 but I just seen this thread, I agress with MrScott to try the LED exchange. This will help you understand soldering and basic electronics and is a good start for you. after that you can add a plug to recharge your batteries so you don't have to remove them, Just plug in and charge.

Whoa there I'm not even sure if I have the gumption to unscrew him. Soldering and that plug is way out of reach.

BG try soldering some LED's first before moding your quad this will help you understand the process and you'll see it's not hard but practice is needed. I'll post ssome simple LED plans that you can go to radio shack and get the parts and then try it out, I Would hate it if you messed up your Quad. I'll post something tonight when I get off work for you..

I'm in agreement with GWJax 100%.
It's important to learn the basics of soldering to help you with the repair and enhancements of your robots.

Sooner or later (very soon if you start opening up your robots)you will need to be able to reattach a wire, or replace a component. Some of the wiring is relatively delicate. It's easy to pull a wire loose when separating body sections. I pulled a battery wire loose when repainting my mini-RSV2.

A broken wire is so easy to fix, that you won't think twice about it once you learn how. You'll accept it as something that's just part of standard maintenance. It took me longer to heat up the soldering iron than it took to fix the wire.

Soldering isn't hard to get started with. The basics are simple. It is a skill that will improve with practice, and you probably don't want to get that practice by doing it for the first time on your RoboQuad.

There's a thread from earlier this year that shows one source for a beginners soldering kit.

yes MrScott this is a very good starter kit to get from Radio Shack I do recomend this kit for you BG.

I don't mean to crash in on this thread, But BG, If you want to do mods to your bots and make them look better, You have to start from the beginning and as MrScott and GW have stated you should first try out some soldering and or a starter kit to get used to soldering and electronic components, the biggest factor is NOT over heating the components a 25w soldering iron with a fine tip and no more than about 3-5 seconds on the component, but this also depends on the wattage of your soldering iron. Electronics is fun BG and the sooner you learn the more fun you will have. Nothing worse than wanting to do something but are afraid that you might muck it up or destroy something. Go forth young one and experiment, life is to short not to.

People yearn after this robotic dream, but you can't strip your life of all meaning, emotion and feeling and expect to function.

So I can't just open him up and unscrew the bulb then just put a new bulb in place?

No. They are not light bulbs with screw bases. They are Light Emitting Diodes with wire leads that you need to connect to.

Go read that first article I posted the link to in this thread. Especially this page...

http://www.robocommunity.com/article/11536/How-I-Replaced-Roboquad-s-Eyes-and...

I clearly shows what you're getting yourself into if you do this modification.

Ah. Hmmm. Well thanks for participating in this thread sadly I'm too puny to do this stuff and though I own a solderer I do not possess the experience to use it so Good Night Folks!
