I'm dying here!  When can we get it?  I'm building a server cluster right now to control the little bugger and I was hoping it would be my Christmas present.  Any news would be appreciated!

A server cluster? All you'll need is a web browser.

I've heard things like "end of summer" for a release, but I don't know how accurate that really is.

Watch out, don't step in the anthropomorphization.

can't wait until it comes out

If you got the latest Robots magazine, there's an article on how to build your own telepresence internet enabled rover, but it wouldn't have the nav system.

Hi,

I see www.meetrovio.com is promising 08/08.

I have some quesitons:

  1. Will there be a subscription required ( IRobot's ConnectR wants a monthly fee for what seems like a dynamic DNS service)?  Panasonic webserver cameras have a free dynamic "host" viewnetcam.com
  2. Will addtional NorthStar "beacons" be immediately available? Once out of a room, the base station NorthStar ceiling image can't be seen by Rovio.  Will other beacons be needed for all other rooms; how might they be "related" to each other - some overlap in projected ceiling images?
  3. What wifi router setup will be required (e.g. port forwarding, UDP, UPNP)?
  4. Can multiple Rovios in one location be conveniently controlled?  If one Rovio is upstairs, and one downstairs, can they be "combined" and viewed and controlled from one web page (frames in the same window)?

Any thoughts?

Can't wait for it to come out.

People yearn after this robotic dream, but you can't strip your life of all meaning, emotion and feeling and expect to function.

What's the server cluster for?  Streaming video?

August 2, 2008 6:04 AM

For autonomous cats, dogs and rats detection, recognition and catching probably :))

Free RoboPanda!!! :)

Yes! If something has a dump, it must be hacked :))

Amazon has a listing for the Rovio: http://www.amazon.com/WowWee-Rovio-Enabled-Robotic-WebCam/dp/B001CQLGD6/ref=w...

According to the company that makes the Rovio "GPS", each room will require a beacon: " The IR projectors use low-cost LEDs, and can be small and unobtrusive. They can be designed to plug into an outlet like an air freshener, be built into a recharging station, stand alone on a bookshelf, or be embedded into a mobile product."
Hopefully, Wowwee will offer them as an inexpensive ($10-15) add-on. More details about the NorthStar "GPS" system here:http://www.evolution.com/products/northstar/integration.masn

Easch computer in the cluster will (ideally) handle one aspect of the robot's control. I'm hoping to get the video on one, nav on another, with the main computer sorting it all out. Eventually I want to get some pattern recognition in there as well. Thought Rovio would make a nice lab rat :)

Rovio Delayed Until Mid September http://www.toy-robots.co.uk/2008/08/rovio-delayed-until-mid-september.html

It looks like the Rovio will be delayed until mid-September. The news from Red5 is that they've had to be it back until then :-(

Is this vaporware?

Not likely.

Probably just taking them a little longer than they thought to get the Evolution GPS thingie idiot-proofed.

I Agree. And, with only 8 days left in this month, when's it coming out?

I just really want it to come out so I can get it. It sounds cool.

I have a feeling that this won't be available until the holidays.

Vaporware

Vaporware is a somewhat derogatory term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar software/hardware product. The term implies unwarranted optimism, an as yet unannounced abandonment of a project, or sometimes even deception; that is, it may imply that the announcer knows that product development is in too early a stage to support responsible statements about its completion date, feature set, or even feasibility. However, most vaporware would not be considered a hoax since the makers have a genuine intention to create their product, even if it ultimately never materializes. wikipedia.org

Ya, I know what vaporware means. "Duke Nukem Forever" and the Phantom video game console come to mind.

I wouldn't say Rovio has "well exceeded the period of development" either. We're now two whole days past the August 2008 that meetrovio.com said. To continue that sentence from your post; "... or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar software/hardware product". Spykee is currently about the only other similar project, and it's way farther past it's expected due date than Rovio is.

I'd also like to point out the existence of the hardware in the videos from January, and the distinct differences between that robot and the one (barely) shown at meetrovio.com and in the latest (late July) video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOF7r9Nw8ro . The bottom chassis is different, the design of the "head" is different, the charging base is different, the software UI shown is different. Looks like they've been through major revisions of everything except the basic idea of "three omni wheels and a webcam". I haven't seen a video of Spykee with hardware newer than January.

Relax. It'll happen. Then again, I could just be a WowWee fanboy :)

Watch out, don't step in the anthropomorphization.

Now, if you want to talk vaporware, there's the RSV3, though that one hasn't ever officially had a delivery date.

The revised software for the RSMedia is another candidate for vaporization.
