Background:

I ordered my first WowWee product today; the ToysRus version RoboQuad (Silver/Black, $49.98). I specified 2nd day shipping, so I expect it about the middle of next week (possibly WED/THUR). I 'just got interested' in robotics (again) about a week ago. After doing a LOT of research, downloading manuals, reading reviews; I determined that the RoboQuad would probably be the best 'first thing' to buy. I also want to get a RoboBoa. LATER I might want the RS Media (but I have concerns about its mobility on carpet, and possibly the PC software). There are a couple of other Non-WowWee robots and robot kits that I am interested in, but I will wait until I have had the RoboQuad (and RoboBoa if I can find one) for a while.

I can't wait to see how my cat reacts to it.

I'm not exactly new to robotics- years ago I used to experiment with 'cheap' robotics kits. I am a licensed radio amateur (see profile). I am also interested in high-power lasers lately, for some reason.  So if I decide to get into modding, I might be able to think of some interesting things to do.

Anyway...

(1) About the WowWee store - hopefully there is no reason to be concerned (since the link is posted throughout the forums) - but when you hit the site, you are redirected to 'esend.com/WowWee?' Is the WowWee store ('esend') reliable?

(2) I tried to order a RoboBoa thru the WowWee store - but stopped myself, and sent an email to the site (not answered yet, the email was just sent late this afternoon).

This is what I see when I click for the RoboBoa (copied and pasted):

-----

WowWee Roboboa - 8032

Robosapien is now available in a 7 in tall, battery operated Mini Robosapien version. He is fully detailed and looks just like the 14 in original. And, with his real walking action, light up eyes, and posable arms with gripper hands, Mini Robosapien is the perfect size to play with anytime, anywhere.

Online Price: $59.99

-----

I am assuming that the wowwee store -> esend site is just glitched? It's my understanding that the RoboBoa costs more than $59, and the description doesn't match...

IS the RoboBoa available in the USA yet? I looked at the PlayAsia site - it lists 'their' RoboBoa as the 'hongkong' version...

(3) Postings here suggest that the RoboRemote isn't quite available yet, BUT it is listed on the WowWee store (esend) site. If I purchase one there, WILL I receive it? And related, I suppose - would I see a benefit from this? I should be able to answer that for myself, simply because it is relatively cheap. Has anyone tried the RoboRemote on a Vista computer? As far as I can see, the advantage (for a RoboQuad) is that I can store more complex sequences on my computer (more complex than the default remote, or at least a way of backing up sequences), load them into the RoboRemote, and command the RoboQuad.

- Thanks,

-Jeff

1) Don't know about esend, that's kinda new.
2) That's the description for a Mini-RoboSapien, which shouldn't cost $59.99
3) Don't know. Yes, RoboRemote works with Vista.

Unfortunately it seems the store still only ships to the US and Canada.

Hi... always glad to see new blood :)

If what you are expecting out of the RoboRemote is a way to "program" your RoboQuad, then I think you would be happy with it. Like you said, it is inexpensive and with relatively unlimited  sequence length - compared to the original remotes, I must assume that there is some sort of memory barrier, but I'm not sure what it is - should allow you to get wild and crazy with your new friends. And since it works with all WowWee bots past, present and future, it should more than pay for itself in the long run...

If/when you do get one, I hope you'll share your sequences with us here in the download area!

BTW - RoboQuad is an excellent first choice for a WW robot. Out of all the WW bots I have (see http://www.robocommunity.com/forum/thread/13110/What-WowWee-Robots-do-you-have-/), I think Quad is the coolest.

It uses 64K in an Atmel EEPROM. In case you were wondering...

Nocturnal and RebelTaz; thanks for replies.

About the RoboRemote... I opened up the (PDF) RoboRemote manual that I downloaded (looking at it again right now). There are no specifications for in-remote memory limitations. There are 4 function buttons (arrow buttons U/D/L/R) and a shift button (three shift levels) so you can store 12 sequences in the RoboRemote, but no indication as to how long those sequences can be (how many actions can be stored in a specific 'timeline'). BUT (copied and pasted from the PDF manual):

'NOTE: You can create a control function on the timeline that includes more
than one robot; when playing back the control function using Roboremote, make
sure all the robots used in the control function are on and their IR receivers are facing Roboremote.' (*possibly* implies some length / capacity here)

'NOTE: Once your Roboremote is connected to your computer via USB, it will be powered by your computer instead of its batteries. This helps save on battery usage.' (hmmm.... nah, I'm being silly)

In any case, according to RoboQuad manual (the PDF I downloaded) any programming is lost when you shut it off (or it puts itself to sleep for >= 24 hours); so even with my initial WowWee purchase, I think it would be a good investment. Interesting sequences can be backed up to the hard drive (and archived to CDRom).

About the WowWee store and the 'esend' thing. 'esend is 'kinda new''. Hmmm. Now I am reluctant to use them, especially with that error concerning the RoboBoa.

BUT... I just googled wowwee roboremote, found the 'roboremoteonline' site. 'Where to Buy' sez 'Coming Soon!'. ACK! ack, I say! But 'contact' has a (1-800) phone number listed for inquiries... good. I will call them on monday and ask about the wowwee store, 'esend', roboboa, and if/when I can get a roboremote. Just for good measure I am about to email the wowwee store (esend) again, and ask for a PHONE NUMBER again, a short reference to my first emaikl about the RoboBoa, and explain that now I am also interested in RoboRemote and that I want one.

Hehehe... who SEZ getting old(er) is the pitts? It gives one the RIGHT to be grouchy.

If I get good info on the WowWee store (etc) througout next week, I'll post it here for the good of the community etc.

Minor Update:

I shot off two emails today, one to the WowWee store, and one to the (USA) sales rep thru the WowWee main site.

I just received a reply from the USA sales rep (on a saturday!). I was given a name, and a phone number - I am supposed to contact someone on monday about my issues (WowWee store, availability of RoboBoa and RoboRemote in USA).

It's a Canadian area code (Montreal / Quebec).

If I find out anything definitive that is helpful to the community, I'll post it.

I believe the maximum number of IR sequences that can be stored in a single slot is 160.

Hi Everyone-

Just want you all to know that the Wowweestore.com has partnered up with e-send for new and improved distribution throughout the USA and now Canada. We are aware of many of the issues we are currently having on the store site and we are working at correcting them all.
Your feedback and comments are very important to us so please keep them coming.

BTW,
Roboremote is now avaialable at the wowweestore.com.

Regards to all,

Gale;

Thanks, I'm sure that news is probably welcomed by the entire Robo Community. I for one appreciate it.

I spoke to someone in Montreal twice today; someone there is working on the RoboBoa -> USA issue, and I will be contacted over the phone or through email. I am advised that tomorrow (TUES 1 July) is Canada Day (similar to the USA Independance Day), and I might not hear anything until Wednsday. Hopefully I will receive news as to how and where to (easily) purchase one.

There is always the PlayAsia site (Hong Kong). There is a notice there to 'check with local customs regulations'. Just in case Montreal doesn't come through for me (and perhaps even if they do, but a RoboBoa has to be sent from Canada), I called the closest customs official to my city (which is now closely associated with the Department of Homeland Security; maybe customs issues used to be easier).

His explanation was complicated. He states that if you order something from ANY other location, be it Hong Kong or even Canada, it MUST clear customs, and that usually means that the customer must physically pick up the item. For me, that would be Dallas - a four hour drive from Abilene Texas.

I explained that I am disabled (I am a disabled military retiree; service connected disability) and that I do not drive. In that case, he says, UPS, FedEx, or whoever could 'act as the customer's agent'. The item would have to be sent (for example) initially to the UPS hub in Memphis Tennesee, where it would clear, and then resume for a direct delivery to my door. He stated that basically I would have to make arrangements with BOTH UPS and the sender to coordinate this. Argh. Or maybe UPS would just do this anyway, as a part of doing business? (I hope?)

Anyway, I'll see what news I get on wednsday, maybe it will be good.

I just ordered *three* RoboRemotes via the WowWee store - the transaction seemed to work properly, and I received a confirmation email.

(Reason for THREE; at this time, I am not interested in the RoboRemote hack, but you never know. In any case, individual RoboRemotes could each be programmed for individual WowWee models - I have one RoboQuad on the way to be delivered this week, and I HOPE to aquire a RoboBoa soon. Now to download the software....).

I ran across a thread SOMEWHERE in this forum, I wish I could remember where; to the effect that someone attempted to order a RoboRemote via WowWee Store, and they just received a string of JavaScript errors. A search didn't find it. Anyway, that problem is apparantly fixed.

There's a little known feature on the community search that might be able to help you.  Do a search, then in the search criteria, under "Refine Results" (click on the down arrow on the right), there is an option to refine the search to "My History".  This will only bring back results that you have previously read. Click it and redo the search and see if that helps!

Exterminate! Exterminate!

Update: Montreal still hasn't gotten back to me (via phone or email) concerning the RoboBoa-to-USA, BUT there seems to have been a development. I'll finish this in the 'News, Rumours and Gossip' forum area.
