Hey,

Since I cannot wait for the release of the Rovio, I decided to make one myself with the Lego Mindstorm NXT robot kit. I got the idea of this not too long ago and I am finally going to do it. I plan on giving it the ability to move on its own and it can follow the commands you give it via bluetooth. I have a mini camera smaller than a nerds candy box that I plan on mounting somewhere on it so I can watch live video as it wanders around the house. I am going to give it two light sensors so it can follow a line around my room with duct tape or I can make a path around the house with it so it can survey the area. I am also going to use the touch and ultra sonic sensors to give it a degree of wall avoidance. I am not the best at programming but I think I can figure this out.

I am going to order some omni wheels online. This is what I had in mind. They do not cost too much and I think they will work nicely. I just have to get them to work with the lego mindstorm motors, I will take pictures of them when they come in so you get a better idea of what they look like. http://www.omniwheel.com/cgi-bin/plugins/MivaEmpresas/miva?plugins/MivaMerchants/merchant.mvc+Screen=PROD&Store_Code=KCWD&Product_Code=RW9&Category_Code=Omniwheel

Please check out the gallery and read the captions under them.

I think it will be a cool thing to have around. After I get bored with this robot, I plan on taking it apart and building a more advaced one. One with three wheels that all turn at once to move the robot in different directions. Instead of three motors, I would only have to use two but this is more advanced and I want to get into this first before I go deeper into it.

This is great, Billboard - thanks for posting on your upcoming project. Looking forward to seeing your results, and good luck.

I think we'd all like to see more pics and video, too, as it comes along!

I am going to start it here next week. I need to get the money to purchase the wheels before I start the build so I know how I am going to transfer the wheels to lego.

You guys are incredible. These kind of things are way beyond me! Way to go.

I started with 2 robots but before I knew it, well, it's a disease I tell you.

The Lego Mindstorms NXT was one of the non-WowWee items that I was VERY interested in. Maybe I'm still interested, but...

... I saw a couple of posts (customer reviews, don't remember where I saw them, Amazon maybe) - to the effect that the 'brick' has a relatively limited memory capacity. Very short, very simple programs?

Maybe a NXT owner could clarify?

(a bit off topic, sorry); The other major non-WowWee product that I was interested in was the i-Sobot. Downloaded the manual, read everything that I could find on it...

... no collision avoidance, apparantly. Apparantly the only environmental sensor it has is the Gyro and the Speech Recognition chip. Perhaps if there was an i-SeeingEyeDogBot....

I had about 12 programs with about 60 movements in each and I had enough space for more. The memory never gave me a problem. I need to buy the wheels still.

Man, I need some money. :/

Yes - sorry - I did some research. At one point, Lego improved the kit. Something they did 'released about 80% more RAM for the user'.

The review that I read (I think it was a comment on Amazon or someplace) must have been very old.

I have a couple of iSobots now, and they are fairly limited as far as programmability. I'd consider replacing the controller board with a different MCU but you need to have 5 serial ports since the servos on each limb are on a separate bus.

I like NXT too, and the three wheel omniwheel design should be great. My son built a 4 motor hamster, which is a problem because the NXT brick only has 3 motor ports. I can get a motor multiplexor but that's another $40 or so.

Can't wait to see your construction, Billboard! You could still work on the motor program for directional movements without having the wheels. Are you using one of the other C programs for the NXT, or the lego mindstorms software?

I like NXT, I have two sets and a lot of Technics, I wish I had more time to construct projects with it. I have tried both mindstorm and Robolab ver2.9 here is a list that you can use.

Im gonna use the software that game in the kit. I plan on making it so it avoids walls so I got to plan something like making the ultrasonic be like when it runs toward something, it will wait until it get a foot away, the robot will then backup a little bit then it will turn around so it faces the other way. I am also going to get a blue tooth thing for the laptop so I can control it that way. I dont like programming before I have the robot. I do not have my plan on how to get the motors in a certain way. Ill let you see my programs if you would like when I start and If I could, ask for some help if I need it.

LEGO Omniwheel Robot

i successfully replaced old motors with 3 nxt servo motors (i will update the image) ;)

since i control the servos with a custom avr board, somewhere i found a schematic of the intenals (servo motor) - but i cant remember the link

ya the LEGO Omniwheel Robot is pretty cool, you don't even have to buy the wheel you make them out of LEGO wheels, Neat concept I think. also lego has all the schematic for the NXT and its components right on there site for free, What a cool idea that they made the brick an Open-Source-Program unit. This opens the doors for anything you can imagine.
