When reading the title you probably thought that this would be a dumb thread about developing artificial intelligence on a future Robosapien (or through a firmware update). However you are only half right.

I have been pondering affordable ways to make the Robosapien much more life like and I believe I have come up with a viable solution to this problem. After reviewing the specifications of the Robosapien RS Media, I have come to the conclusion that WowWee could integrate decent artificial intelligence into their already existing lineup of Robospien products (or future products).

How can this be achieved? I believe by combining the artificial intelligence available through the many A.I controlled chat programs available on the internet with voice recognition, you could have a real life robot that you can talk to and have it intelligently answer you back with realistic responses.

Sounds to good to be true? It is not and the technology and software has been available since the 1990's. In fact, you can test out the artificial intelligence for free here:

http://www.zabaware.com/webhal/index.html

I believe this software could be intelligently combined with voice recognition to allow consumers to be able to talk to their Robosapiens and have their Robosapiens respond back in real time. The software isn't perfect but it's definitely a giant leap over what is available now and while I am neither a programmer or engineer, I believe the systems could be adapted in a future version of the Robosapien if not the currently released models.

I would like to hear from you the consumers and what you think about this idea. Do you believe it would work? Does this sound like an idea that you would like? If this concept intrigues you then I would suggest emailing the idea to WowWee in hopes that they can take a realistic look at the concept.

Welcome to the RoboCommunity, Kevin.

Having an Eliza program on my RoboSapien wouldn't interest me.
From the thread intro, this task could be accomplished today by having the robot carry a notebook computer running the dialog software. It's not describe as being integrated into the robot's function.

The cost of such a thing is the processing power needed to pull it off.
I can use that integrated processing power for more technically meaningful robotics tasks like image pattern recognition, navigation, camera/manipulator coordination, etcetera.

In my opinion, voice command recognition, with some meaningful parsing driving physical responses, is a tougher nut, and more interesting for robot control purposes.

I've always found the AI chatbots interesting, but as MrScott says, unless you can integrate that AI with the robots other functions it really wouldn't be much different than strapping a PC running an AI chatbot to a bucket and calling that an "Artificially intelligent robot"..... also voice recognition isn't yet really at the point where a person can speak in a normal human tone and have the computer understand you, emphasis has to be placed on command words, and they often need be repeated several times before the software understands what you're trying to tell it.... for instance, a simple phrase such as "Lassy, go find Timmy" might become something more like this "LASSY..... GO....FORWARD....2.....UNITS.....TURN......LEFT......FIND......TIMMY(no response from robot)...................TIMMY(still no response from robot).........GO FORWARD........TURN LEFT.........FIND........LASSY!!!......ah this stupid piece of crap!!!!!"

Regarding voice command parsing having a tendancy to ignore input, I suppose we could just advertise the robot as a realistic AI representation of a teenager. Tongue out

That's funny :)

It also makes me think to your previous post regarding image recognition. Once the robot has the processing power to recognize images, I wonder if it could be taught sign language? It could possibly be much easier for the 'bot to understand sign rather than spoken word. All in all it also sounds like something I don't really want to mess with, so this paragraph is just a musing "out loud" so to speak.

Kevin,

As far as adding Eliza like chatbot programming to a robot, please see this thread and see if you still think it's a good idea :)

Watch out, don't step in the anthropomorphization.

This is something I'm atempting with the Elvinator Project, I will be using the A.L.I.C.E program for this and a voice reconition system as well. it will be attached to a PC though but is will be fun making him learn as he is you talk to to him.

GWJax, To Hack and make mods on robots is a life style and comes natural and not by choice. If a robot has a screw to open it then it must be opened!

I believe it would work. I would like to see what happens if for example Billy would live in the humanoid robot. Leo is even worse. I told him that Billy is sad because Alice is not here and what he does? He says to Billy "I do not know how to kill Alice". Jules (Hanson Robotics) is pretty cool. If I could have a robot like that.

Leo: For example today I will get love which I use to create sentences.
Billy: But you are neutral you need love.
Bridget: In the sky and cover the moment.
Bridget: Do you think that sleep mode is better than a human soul.

Or a politician...

Would it be possible to put parts of Robopet into a Robosapien? It just came to my mind because my Robopet can not walk anymore. I have also two Teknos who can not walk. I just don´t know how AI and programming would react when having just two legs which of course makes everything more exciting. I don´t do hacks (yet) so I don´t know about these things.
