I just picked up a U Command WallE from Toys R Us for $39, he's pretty cool. Infrared controlled, not quite full motion control (one motor, forward or spin), head moves, eyes move, arms move (mechanical linkage to head?). Here's a gallery of some shots to enjoy! (OOPS being called to play by the U Fix WallE owner pictured above! More in a bit)

Pix from inside U Command WallE added to gallery. Main board is single-sided PCB, controller is under epoxy blob.

Nice pics milw, Thanks for posting them. Gw and i have just been talking about his one. Can't wait for the Ultimate Wall-E to come out.

better video Thanks, Yep have to fix the CG on this one. Plus he move too fast and thats where most of the problem is. This can be fixed by replacing the main board with our Wall-E program and add sensors to him as well. since he has alot of space the motors will be replaced with servos and also the arms, I will have fun with this one.

Looks like fun milw, i may have the same problem with my one, I will have to place the NIMH battery right at the back on the base to off set his Cg.Nice vid though

cool, I hope you can find one soon! Do you think the Ultimate is much bigger than this? (body is about 4.75" front to back on top, 5" on bottom, and right around 4.5" wide).
Here's the Try-Me mode video:

this sounds just like the interactive wall-e with the try-me button same recordings and arm movements, I would record them but he is in modifaction mode right now for the Wall-E platform. great video milw

Hmmmm - looking at the internals, it looks like they cheated a bit by using only one drive motor for both treads. I'm sure the ultimate version won't have that cost cut. It looks like the upper part is only driven by one motor too? - not sure on that one....

June 1, 2008 7:32 PM updated: June 1, 2008 7:37 PM

Yes, you're right nicerobot, its one motor and a gear box for the two treads, and the same motor that moves the head is also connected to the arms by a sort of cam mechanism. So it's really only 3 motors. I'll definitely be putting two drive motors in because I really hate spinning around to change direction!

oh so GW, you got one of the interactive ones? I missed that somehow, what was the price like on that? (ok I went back and found the post... about how big is the body on yours?)

Not bad at all milw, looks like he could do with speed control of some type, That would stop him falling over, he stops to quick and the inertia makes him fall over, i think that might happen to mine also, We will have to see.All in all though pretty good demo milw.

4mem8 ours will not tumble over like this one does just because we'll have motor control. the interactive wall-e is half size of the u-command, plus it has one motor for the head and arm movements and a switch that detects the tracks rotation so it's like pressing down the try-me button and it has a mic incorporated in it. the price is 29.95, It also interacts with Eva but I did not see her, I think the RX/TX sensors are in the eyes but I have not gotten into them yet. The Tamiya dual Gearbox kit is a perfect fit for this unit with a little bit of cut outs on the bottom and changing the rods to fit the track assy. I have not taken any pictures of the disamembly which is weard of me not to do but oh well I can alway go back. This unit is a perfect platform for me to finnish up the coding for wall-e once I remove the motor and attach up the tilt/pan servo's and arm servos and gear box. I think I need to use the super ultra mini servo for this but thats ok I just need 4 more. The ping sensor is a perfect fit in the eyes but not enough room for the led's to light up, I'm sure the u-control is better for this, so before I get too envolved with this I may wait till Thursday when the U-Commmand comes in to the stores on the next shpment. We'll just have to see.

Yes you are right GW ours will have that speed control, so it should be OK, I was referring to what I have now, it is front heavy but when the battery goes in the weight shifts back, so I think it will be OK.

battery placement is going to be the key on the CG if its off then you'll have the tipping action, which is what we don't want. I guess they did not do enough testing on the u-command else they would have caught this problem. That what you get when you rush things.

Yes, maybe it was pretty rushed. The date on the PCB is Jan 25 08. I wonder if the little rollers were added late in the design (though I don't see how they would help with tippiness). Reconfiguring to put the batteries in the bottom shouldn't have been that hard. I'm also curious if they used the same controller/board in your interactive version, maybe not fully populated?

the board look almost the same but missing some transistors for an hbridge I'll take a picture of it so you can compair it.

Like everything when a movie comes out the toys follow, you just have to wonder when these toy manufacturers start their designs to get all the bugs worked out.

Milw - how does the programming feature work? I'm curious if you can make this guy repeat a path from point A to point B accurately. Thanks!

June 2, 2008 9:28 AM

Milw, thanks for posting details and videos!! I agree with some of the comments that its movements are very fast, I imagine that it's difficult to control. It will be interesting to see how this compares with the Ultimate Wall-E!

hm, I only tried with a few commands, but tonight I'll see if I can get him to go in a square. It appears that the remote forgets the program when turned off; but it's similar to Robosapien programming- you hit the programming button and he makes a noise, then for each command button press he makes a beep. I'd like to check if the whole program is sent in a fast stream, or if each command is sent with an interval between to allow him time to accomplish the command.
