toys are where the money is and what our kids love (the future of robotics), so I'm down with that
ideally toys just broaden the line of bots, instead of replacing the hackable ones, so I see where're you coming from
I wouldn't assume anything is at an end, though, robot revolution is just starting
Ok so Wowwee started with the first Robosapien, a hackers dream! Built for us hobbyists! Then came RSV2, not quite so hackable but fun none the less! Finally came RS Media, with its Linux Kernel and Java. SD Card slot, USB port, it was what many of us wanted. Of course only a handful have done anything with it yet. So it did not do terribly well. Now we got the new line coming out. Rovio is very promising! However the rest, the Robosapien line appears to me to be going backwards. They seem mere amusement toys with little in the way of any sort of programming hacking etc. Tilden himself said the possibility of RSV3 relied on the success of RS Media. I think it will be the last of this sort of line...I could be wrong but I think we will be leaning more toward the complete toy line.
I have to agree... Many a times I have stated already how disappointed I was when the new line of "Bots" was unveiled this year. I do like the Rovio, and have some ideas for the actual wheel base from the tri-bots... but the rest of it all has just seemed to take a landslide backwards.
True, I could be wrong, we know what happens when we assume

Yes agreed the Tribot wheelbase as at least something new and Rovio is using the new GPS so its not all bad. However Wowwee did kind of shoot themselves in the foot with lack of support for RS Media. Java school here was an attempt by a talented user to get us all going but there was never cooperation with the Java SDK so only the people that got the limited SDK release last year could do anything with it. Also they could have made it easier to access the serial console function without having to hack in and solder and risk trashing your RS Media. They promised new Java games coming, never happened. They had some good hardware in there but it just was never followed through on.
