Hello guys, For those of you that do not know Parallax is putting out a new drive system soon and I am getting one to test it out and create a new bot. I have a couple of idea's so will keep you all guessing for a while. Not sure when it will arrive yet. But the machining is superb.

Let me know what you think.

Any links where we can go look at this? I googled for it, but couldn't find anything.

So pneumatic tires, fixed gearing ratios and are those chopper discs on the left, with dual sensors for direction?

It does look nice and shiny, all metal?

Kansaswind, Parallax should be releasing them soon They are not on their site yet, but there are pics like these on the Parallax forums of the parts you see here.

4mem8,

As you well know I am wanting a set of these myself! They look unbelievably nice.

Thanks 4mem8.
I did se this on thier site, kind of looks like it might be using these parts:

But at $4,000 US it is a bit much. Looking forward on what ever you are planning on building.

No, That's different Kansawind, They are about $270 US. Here are some more pics.

Hey that that's cool 4mem8. If I could do something like that, I make another robotic dinosaur.

J.T I did not make the above chassis, That was another few shots of their product, I have not received mine yet.

I know you have a pair coming, but check this out - http://forums.parallax.com/forums/default.aspx?m=265808&f=3&p=1#m265808 and this too http://www.parallax.com/Store/Robots/RoboticAccessories/tabid/145/ProductID/507/List/1/Default.aspx?SortField=ProductName,ProductName

I just ordered a pair! I hope I'm in the top five. They are supposed to ship next week.

Well darn, Whit+ found them on the site. I guess I'm just old and didn't see it. This is something that is interesting for a project I'm thinking about. A robotic floor sander. I need a good strong and heavy base that moves around while lowering and raising cylinder that either has a sanding sleeve or a sanding belt kind of thing.

The wife says I just don't want to sand the floors again. Which is correct since the last time I did it, I blew a disc in my back.

That would be a cool project!!

Blow a disc sanding or blow some bucks on a really cool robot - you make the call!

I took a careful look of the wording on the motors. Found this on Google: http://www.skycraftsurplus.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=813

Looks like the motor and mounting are from car window motors.

Not sure if this will be enough power. I've imagined the system would wiegh around 30 to 40 lbs. The motor I have thought of using for the sander weighs about 15 lbs, maybe another 10 lbs or so for the frame to hold the sanding unit. Something like a floor drum sander.

I agree, I do not think this would be suitable for your project, This unit is powerful but your proposal would need a bigger unit i suspect. Although it's not the power from the motor it's the output from the gear head that is more important. These are electric window motors so have a fair bit of grunt.

Update, my new Parallax motor drive unit arrived today, and what a neat package, Very well machined, includes shaft encoders. Take a look at the above pics for details, can't wait to do some project with this beast.

Received another load of Parallax bits today for my drive unit, So do you guys want to send in some idea's for this base unit, I have some but I would like to know your thought as to what can be made out of it.

I think you should experiment with making a shipping box ballast out of it. I will gladly volunteer to receive shipment of that ballast to help you in your experiment. If the first experiement works out, you can continue to ship variations on the ballast to me at regular intervals. Tongue out

Hey, a guy can dream, can't he?

On a more serious note, this is fundamentally a two wheel drive platform, right? I recall them looking pretty rugged. How much torque and load carrying capability do you think they have?

Mr Scott: This was answered partly by Kevin on the Parallax forum.Hope this helps answer your question.

We haven't "officially" determined the load carrying capacity of each unit yet. However, to give you some idea of what it is capable of, we were able to stand on our two-wheeled test platform while driving it around. I weigh about 175 lbs and I felt comfortable riding the robot. That means that each wheel was supporting about half that weight. The caster wheels on the robot are raised slightly off the ground and only provide stability (not support) on one side or another. A different co-worker weighing about 200 lbs also tried it out successfully.

nono DISCLAIMER: This does not mean that it was designed to carry or transport people. It also does NOT in any way state or imply the maximum load capacity of the wheel kits.

However... as a personal project I would feel pretty comfortable using these to build a robot platform that could carry someone. I would probably use a 4-wheel design (two sets of wheels and motors) for increased stability, load capacity, and torque.

Keep in mind that the load on each wheel is roughly the total weight of the robot (and payload) divided by the number of points of contact to the ground (each wheel). Additionally it may be slightly different than that depending on where the center of mass is positioned. For example: if I built a 4-wheeled robot that could hold a 200 lb person, the load on each wheel would be roughly 50 lbs each (200 lbs / 4 wheels).
