We had seen a similar type of model dragonfly in a previous post, a solar-powered model that didn't actually fly.

There's another, more "gilded" dragonfly, available for a scant $15,000, via JesseDanger, a seller on Etsy.  It's called the "Anax Imperator Machina," or loosely translated to "The Emperor Dragonfly Machine," according to some Google searching.  (If anyone here is an expert on Latin, please chime in, here's some of what I found.)

What's particularly intriguing about this work of art, at least to me, is that it's mechanical, employing a system of gears.  I'm fascinated with mechanical watches and have a small collection of my own... although it's nothing compared to the collections of some (presumably very wealthy) folks, it's a start!  That being said, I'd love to have a mechanical dragonfly of my own, but $15,000 is a little steep :)

You have to wonder how long the gears will last, being made of 14K gold. To me (a semi-trained entomologist) it looks more like a cicada with the tail added on. It's pretty cool though, I'd like to see a video of the wings in motion!

Not being anything like an entomologist, just someone who chased a lot of dragonflys as a child, and had a cat that liked to eat Cicadas in the summer, I have to agree. The wings definately look cicada like to me (thats usually all that was left after the cat was finished), though its hard to tell from that photo.

Any idea why the gears are gold?

erm, to make it worth $15,000? There's more pictures on Etsy, worth looking at. Eyes are "Swiss Blue Topaz", body and frame is silver.

Cause it's "art".

Watch out, don't step in the anthropomorphization.

Oh I also found that Anax imperator is the scientific name of the largest British dragonfly, as you say Pete, the Emperor dragonfly. Note how the eyes are nearly hemispherical and meet at the dorsal midline; the wings are long and finely laced.

Heres a periodical cicada for comparison, note the stout wing veins, and eyes are smaller and laterally placed on the head.

And finally a wing shot of the Anax imperator machina:

Perhaps the "artist" realized that noone was going to pay $15,00 for a cicada, but they might for a dragonfly.
