Hello,

I`m looking for spareparts for my RS2. It was given to me by the Wowwee-dealer for Netherlands. I knew it was a RS2 that was returned by a customer, it was already defective. I tore open the Robo to find the wires exposed, and the isolation brittle and crumbling. Replaced the nicad batteries for Alkaline batteries, powered the Robo up, and started smoking from the right foot. The brain-batteries blew up (spewing fluid!). The rightfoot sensors (front and rear) started smoking too, burning holes in the print. I think I`m in need for some spare parts. Nocturnal advised me to visit this board. Where do I find spare parts for my bot?? Such as print plates, footsensors, and such.

Thanks in advance,

Rene

That sounds quite gory and violent.FrownPoor V2!

Let me see if I understand what happened.

You got a robot that you knew was defective. You opened it up and noticed that insulation was defective, leaving bare wires exposted. Then you decided to load it up with batteries and turn it on.

You finished up by letting it sit there, short, smoke, and get hot enough to melt plastic and burst batteries.

Yup. You killed it.

Now it's a bookend.

Rather than buy the many parts you may need to resurrect this toasted toy, you may be better off finding a "broken" RSV2 that has a motor or joint problem, and using your current scrap pile as the donor parts for the mechanical parts of the less defective robot.

What you could have done, before powering up the bad wiring harness, is follow the instructions available in various threads in this community to replace the wires, or at least repair the insulation.

You murdered a good v2

Nope. It wasn't a "good RSV2".

It was reportedly suffering from the insulation failures that plagued some fraction of the RSV2 production run.

It may well have already been electronically toast (but not yet melted). Now it sounds pretty well cooked. It needs a new wiring harness and foot pieces, at a minimum. That's just the stuff described as visibly trashed. It may also have toasted some of the control boards.

if  i were you i would get a new one and use it as spare parts.

Yes, I think your cheapest route is to find another dead one (or two!). You'll probably have to fabricate your own replacement wiring harness, since I don't know of anyone who has spares of those!

Thanks for the responds.

Must mention that it started smoking after I insulated the left foot wiring. With the wire now fully allowing the current to pass through, it started smoking from the right foot. Well, now looking for someone who understands these bots (or robotics in general) to get it repaired.

Here's the general outline of what you'll need to do.

  1. dissasemble the shell to access all the wiring in the legs and torso
  2. replace or repair all wiring that has bad insulation
  3. replace or repair all obviously damaged electronics
  4. try powering it up to see how far you get
  5. continue replacing components as needed

Since you'll be needing a fair amount of components if you want to replace the scorched and melted parts, you'll need another robot. WowWee doesn't sell parts.

Since you'll need another robot, your path to robot nirvana might be shorter if you...

  1. obtain another defective robot from whatever sources you have
  2. inspect it well before powering it on
  3. repair any wiring harness issues before powering it on
  4. isolate the defects that caused the previous owner to junk it
  5. hope that pieces for the burned-bot can be used to fix the 2nd bot
That assumes that you can get a 2nd robot that's in better condition than the one that burned out.

As a follow up, there are often folks looking for one odd bit or other. Different things break on different robots. There certainly are some weak points that crop up again and again, but not every robot is knocked out of commission by the same failure each time.

We've seen repeated reports of the crumbling wires, and of lost teeth on the rack and pinion gripper gears. Another user had a retaining clip for a gripper cable pop loose. Some folks are just looking for replacement foot pads.

That being the case, you might want to hang onto your toasted toy to either trade parts with other users, or to resupply your own primary bot with slightly sooty replacement parts.

Yeah, my raptor is completely busted. The foot pads are ground down to nothing, and he has a severe cricket in his neck. Oh, and a bit of a throat cold.

Ha!  Finally, after some thorough rewiring and soldering,  got my defect Robo v2 to work! Electronics seem to be o.k. Will perform every command in the book. Looks I got myself a free, and now working Robo v2. Needless to say I am happy with it. From now on I will let people refer to me as ´Chief Technician´. Only problem there seemed to be was the crumbling wires. The one thing I need to check out is the motor in the right foot, on the heel. Robo will only stumble about a bit, and I noticed a dragging right leg. So....one more thing to fix, and I am all done, I hope.

Thanks to Nocturnal, who provided the Evosapien site with good schematics.

Glad to hear things are going well Rene.

This was in the opening post to the thread,

The rightfoot sensors (front and rear) started smoking too, burning holes in the print. I think I`m in need for some spare parts. Nocturnal advised me to visit this board. Where do I find spare parts for my bot?? Such as print plates, footsensors, and such.

So the melted/burned sensors and feet didn't need replacing after all? I have more appreciation for a robot that has been brought back from the brink, and gets a second life.  Scars can be badges of honor.

Ah, mr Scott,

I forgot to mention that I disconnected and removed the rightfoot sensors, cause they were charred beyond use. The left foot sensors work just fine (after rewiring). So the burn-out left the Robo with a bit of a handicap, although I think it adds to the character and individuality of the bot (but if someone needs to get rid of a pair of good sensors, contact me!). All in all.......not too bad, considering the deteriorated wiring, and shorts the Robo suffered. Besides....he likes to show off his handicap by stumbling about the room a bit, and planting his face in the floor (I think I got a bad motivator!) Soon as I fix the right foot motor I expect him to elegantly dance around the room.

Rene said: Soon as I fix the right foot motor I expect him to elegantly dance around the room.

If he does, he'll be the first that has risen to that level of achievment, and more of us will be setting our robot's feet on fire in pursuit of that ability.

That`s right. Burn a few sensors, make sure those wires are fraying, short-circuit the hell out of your V2`s. After a rewiring and parts-removal they`re as good as new, if not better :-).
