I've attempted to trim down one of my Dragonflies to see if I could make a smaller, more indoor friendly version. I've had partial success. My smallfly is not tremendously smaller than the original DF but it is maybe 2/3 the size. And it's not any more indoor friendly than a regular DF, but it's been fun trying to make it. Took a bit of fine tuning but finally got it flying decent. In fact, to my surprise it does indeed fly very well.

I started by removing the body and trimming down the weight by removing excess parts of the plastic frame. I snipped the tail carbon fiber rod in half and moved the tail rotor closer to the body.

I initially started by just cutting down the original wings but I cut too much mylar away and they didn't have the needed lift. So I removed the carbon fiber rods from them and simply used some mylar gift wrap (it was the only mylar I had handy) to make my own wings. I was quite surprised that my first try at making my own wings worked so well. As an afterthought I just added a white spotlight type led to the underside.

I'll try to get some video clips of it in flight but not promising anything. But I do have some photos...

Cool, I like the bigger tail. I tried an LED on the bottom of mine, but I'd taken the legs off by that point and it quickly got smushed by landings. Are you able to weight it on a gram scale to see if it is much lighter than the original?)

Without wings it weighs 16.7 grams.

Each wing weighs 1.9 g

A standard DF wing weighs 2.1 g

I can't tell what an unmodified DF weighs because it's too much for my scale. More than 20 g. overloads it.

Sorry no video yet. Started having electrical issues. Shorts and whatnot. Then the most recent attempt to recharge the battery resulting in the battery swelling up like a little balloon. I imagine that means I can safely assume the battery is kaput. (Don't worry I'm not going to burn the house down. I watched those Lipo videos too back before I started hacking this thing.)

If memory serves, the stock DF is near 28 grams, so you've pared that down quite a bit! Too bad about the battery though, but now you can put a bigger one on!

I'm wondering whether one of those short circuits you described damaged the battery enough to fail at the next charge.  Shorting Li batteries is a bad idea.

Someplace in the thread archives here there's a discussion of what batteries are compatible, and who had them orderable online.
