Stalling a motor so that it's pulling full current, but converting it all to heat instead of motion, would be a potential problem regardless of the kind of batteries you are using. That's why the RSV2 disables its motors when it falls face down. It is a hard wired protection against driving the motors when steps are not possible.
The toe and heel sensors also help protect the motors from pushing up against an immovable object.
Operating the RSV2 in bulldozer mode, in which it ignores the bump sensors, should be done with caution so that that motors don't totally stall as the robot tries to push through an obstacle.
