On behalf of WowWee, we'd like to extend a challenge to anyone who has captured their FlyTech Dragonfly being snatched up in mid-air by surprise!

But first, some background information... You may or may not have heard about poor Danny McGorry's electronic insect. A local red-tailed hawk from his town in Long Island simply couldn't hold back on swooping down on his new holiday toy, and attacked his Dragonfly. I guess it was the "Hawk that stole Christmas!"

Turns out, we heard from WowWee that they have been receiving a number of service calls about this same issue - there have been several "Dragonfly Vs. Hawk" incidents!

How to Enter the FlyTech Dragonfly VS. Hawk Challenge

We would love to see members of our community submit their "Hawk VS. Dragonfly" videos.

And don't worry, if you did manage to catch the event on film, WowWee will be happy to replace your Dragonfly with a brand new one.

All you need to do is send your video submission to videos@robocommunity.com. You can utilize a service such as YouSendIt to do this. Videos must be sent directly to this email address to qualify.

Such a pity that no large birds of prey reside in my area.

hee hee, we have a whole family of redtails right outside of my office window. I see them every day, so there's a good chance to entice them. Hmm!

How about ants? I'm sure I could convice some ants to try and eat my DragonFly!

i was flying my flytech hornet and a bird was flying above it before but i didnt want to risk my hornet to be eaten if it happens i will try to get it on film and hopefully he wont destroy it :)

coat the entire dragonfly in BIRDSEED!!!!! LOL!!! like going fishing for hawks!!!

put enuf motor on a cinderblock and it WILL FLY!!

February 23, 2008 5:27 PM

erm, hawks don't eat birdseed, that'd be more likely to catch a sparrow. Maybe coat it with hamburger? I may try coloring mine brown to look more bird/moth-like.

February 24, 2008 5:39 PM

erm, it was a joke. . .  therefore it didn't have to be factuly accurate . . .  loosen up. .

maybe try a new color pocket protector huh?? GEEZE!!!

It's a poor comedian that blames the audience when their jokes aren't received as such.

I've never been a fan of insult comics, either, so your heckler response isn't causing any smiles, either.

Anyway, I have the camera and Dragonfly ready (stock green right now) and some brown Sharpie markers. Yesterday we went without a sign of any of the hawks, maybe they knew about the snow (tho we got of with just a dusting, poor Pete in Chicago probably got dumped on!)

February 26, 2008 9:09 AM

The snow came down pretty quick yesterday, but fortunately, the highway driving wasn't too bad.  We're all hoping it will stop soon :)

Just some additional thoughts for trying to video, you need calm air to fly for long which means early morning or evening these days. And you need two people, a pilot and a cameraman (unless maybe I can mount my cam on a hat, how about that idea?!). For me, those two conditions make it pretty much a weekend endeavor, so it may take a while unfortunately.

You go ahead and think/claim that.  That nickname, as it rarely applies to me, is older than you.  I'm guessing it's about 3 times older than you.

I meant in the site, scotty boy. I know I haven't called you that yet, but I was just waiting for the right time.

Here's the prep for the Sparrow. I'm reconditioning my blue Dragonfly body, incorporating the 170 mAh LiPO battery into the body. just enough space on top of the circuit board for it! I've also removed the blue eye LEDs and put a single red one pointing downward (i don't know, but suspect that blue or red glowy eyes might seem weird to a hawk? ). I probably shouldn't have colored the wings all over, it would look more real to have them feathered like a real bird. Oh well.

looks great milw good luck! you'll need it. hehe and go with the video cap tat would be cool to see.

hmm... this challenge is interesting ,but it depends where you live ;for example ,a few years ago I had a dragonfly  (it still can fly but it's starting to be a bit old and it lost a good part of it's colour ) ,so it's a perfect prey ,but I don't think there is french eagles who is silly enough to try to catch a dragonfly.
