I have RS V2, a Sharper Image version. I've had it for over a year. It worked great during this period. I took him on a trip after Christmas to show off to some family and again everything was fine. When I got back home, I was busy and didn't turn him on for a few weeks. When I did, he did not do the usual start-up sequence. When I issue a command from the remote he most often says I need to be upright for that - even though he is - and promptly bends over and falls on his face. When a catch him and let go thru the getting up routine and stand him back on his feet - he usually says I think I have a bad motivator.

So, I either get ...

1) I need to be upright for this, or

2) I think I have a bad motivator

I changed the batteries, but that didn't help. Any ideas on what I should try next?

Likely a stuck tilt indicator.

As much as I'm not a fan of corporal punishment, perhaps a good spanking would set your robot straight again.

Nocturnal has some pages describing the internals sensors.

The tilt sensors are in the feet. One detects forward tilt, the other detects backwards.

Thanks for the tip Mr. Scott. I tried spanking V-2 (pronounced Vito), which was easier after a few more "bad motivator" comments. It seemed to help some -- he started the initiation sequence for the first time in a long time -- however, he keeps getting stuck.

How do I get to these tilt indicators and un-stick them for good? The helpful link you provided points to areas that seem unaccessable (knees & groin area).

Any more ideas anyone? We seem to be beyond spanking.

Thanks!

It's also possible it's a loose cable to one of the body position sensors.

Either way there's not much else for it, but to clear the workbench and start taking off the covers.

Ouch!

I haven't opened a Robosapien before.

Can you point me to a tutorial that will outline how I should start taking off the covers, what to expect and maybe what tools work best. I'd hate to make it worse.

I finally found enough time, courage and help from my brother to open up my RS V2 this weekend. That was pretty cool and not that hard. What I found was a bunch of bare wires and lose insulation pieces flying around inside.

From reading the postings here, I guess this is a known problem. I'm starting the process of contacting WowWee. Are there any suggestions or hints for making this go quick and easy?

If it makes any difference, I bought my v2 from Sharper Image.

Thanks.

I don't know if they will do anything now that your warrenty is gone.  So you mite end up just mailing it in to be repaired.  If the wires are bare i am surprised it hasn't smoked  and shorted yet.

You're certainly beyond the normal warantee, but this particular problem has been handled a bit differently than the normal wear and tear issues that typically kill toys. Make sure you mention that your RSV2 has the crumbling insulation problem when you talk to customer support.

It may not do any good, or they may have a policy of replacments outside of warantee for this particular production problem.

If you end up having to fix it yourself, it's important not to push you luck by trying to operate the robot with the wires shorting out. It might be relatively harmless for 10 times, but that 11th time might end up shorting power to ground and really heating things up.

Some folks have rebuilt their wiring harnesses from scratch. Others have tinkered with paint on insulation to re-insulate the bare wires.

Keep updating this thread on your progress, and we can dredge up other thread references for options and techniques for rebuilding a wiring harness.
