I don't know...maybe its just me. But I just don't see the long term appeal for Pleo. I think initially it would be exciting but days/weeks/months later I think I'd grow tired of it grunting and moving around - after all this thing is still a dinosaur and is only going to do so much...even with the software upgrade... pluse the whole paint peeling issue and how Uglobe has handled it kind of turns me off....

Hi all,
Okay, so I got my tax return and decided on a couple of things. First that I would get an RS Media and second that I would get a Pleo. The RS Media arrived about 2 days before Pleo did. I got to know the Medis pretty well and I am liking the possipilities of the customizing, but I absolutely hate the godless media suite, it is horrible.
Then Pleo arrived. And totally eclipsed my RS Media. Now, I have been vocal in the forums about how unimpressed I have been with all the videos I have seen of Pleo. Were it not for a decent tax return there is no way I could have justified buying it. But man I am sooo glad I did! I can easily say that Pleo is the most incredible consumer available robot that there probably has ever been. Sure, the AIBO ERS-7 had voice recognition and self charging and could walk faster, but it never seemed "alive". The moment you turn Pleo on, he literally comes to life. It is incredible. None of my wowwee bots have ever become part of the family, but Pleo managed to win me over in that capacity in seconds.
This is not to say he is perfect. His edge detection is only reliable when walking perpindicular to the edge. He reacts slowly to being picked up. He lacks the complete Life OS that was originally promised, although Ugobe is making it available as a free download later this year as well as other behaviors. Even with these limitations in mind, Pleo truly is something amazing and I believe he is teh first real step towards making robots more than just toys or workhourses. Pleo is a companion that wants and seeks your attention and affection. I can't reccommend him enough. This is not to say wowwee has anything to fear, clearly Wowwee and Ugobe have very different philosophies and visions for their robots. But if you can aford it (I got mine on ebay for $315 total) then I highly reccomend it!

I got my pleo two weeks ago, he sounded like a puppy almost. Now he is getting older making new sounds with diffrent behaviors its crazy. He is limited somewhat but I think once that lifeOS happens he will be 100 times better than he already is. Also emailed Ugobe and they told me that the lifeOS should be done in a couple of weeks. I dont regret buying him @ all worth every penny!!
The videos are amazing, but I saw a live pleo at the sharper image and uglobe did not send them the power packs so it was like this corspe sitting under a glass bubble. It looked like just a basic toy and turned me off of ever getting one. I understand all the Sharper Image's have Pleo under a bubble without power. What is Uglobe trying to hide?

Nice vid.
I am not so sure about Pleo. He looks cute and friendly, but he is too expensive for something that slow. He seems like a laggard to me. Just cut on the outside but so so slow. Kinda boring actually.
The noises are scarce and quiet, the movements are lagging and restricted, and he kept on moving his head in the same pattern. This thing seems to be not worth my money.

yeah, after owning it for a couple weeks i can definitely say it gets old after a while. Is it worth 350? I would say so if you have lots of cash to burn and you're into robots, but otherwise wait till it gets down to a more modest price.

bare in mind that if you buy a pleo through Sharper Image you can keep him for 30-60 days and return him no questions asked. But again after I saw him at Sharper Image under that bubble lifeless, it just took away the illutions of the videos. But on the other hand, he is the most interactive thing out thier. I don't know if any of you ever heard of Wow Wee robots, but they are just fancy remote control cars. Roboraptor is ok, ironically a dino, but try the rest of those sometime. You will be like Pleo doesn't sound so bad.
Fancy remote control cars? Maybe in your fantasy world. That is a bit of a far fetched statement Bla.
The thing with Wow Wee robots is that most have remotes to control them and can also control themselves. And they have a much more energetic personality. While Pleo painfully slowly lumbers around moaning and moving his head around in the same pre programmed pattern over and over.

Pleo is coming up on one month in my home and is still exibiting new behaviors. Three people asked what it was thinking he was alive! The thing is amazing. And blabla, you are so right, i played with roboquad at some store and he was a fancy remote control car. He did not react to verbal commands at all. And it sounded like a robot. Pleo sounds like a dino. The less you forget that the robot is a robot is the first sign of quality. It is like recogonizing acting in a movie.
That would be because Wow Wee's products do not included voice recognition. Neither apparently does Pleo.

If you really feel a burning urge to use voice control over Wow Wee's products, it can be done with a pc, the robodance software and a USB-UIRT. There is a video of it in action here.
Hey is that supposed to be a plant-eating sauropaud? If it is, then I couldn't get one. My raptor would tear it to pieces.

I feel compelled to say that Nocturnal's post was deleted at his request. No censorship involved... Nocturnal could Edit it and reduce it to a line saying... "duplicate", and it would have been just as clean.

Dude, roboquad is suposed to sound like a robot. Wowwee calls all of their robots robots simply because they are robots and thy are robots because wowwee makes robots and they decide to call them robots for they are robots because they study robotics so they build robots and simply because they are robots, so they are robots. pleo is not sopposed to be a robot but to me it looks like a robot with some rubber dinosuar skin over it thus making roboquad better. Roboquad is a robot and sence he is a robot, he is more of himself than the pleo is, therefore making roboquad more superior than the robotic but not robotic robot pleo.
Roboquad is a robot and wowwee calls it a robot, therefore he is more like a robot
Pleo is a robot and they call him a dinosuar therefore, making him almost like a fake.
Now, kids. Remember to vote for roboquad on march 4 2010 next elections.
Last words I said to my Roboquad:
May the force be with you.
Remember the roboquad. I miss him.
i get the feeling that lepy is a roboquad fan even though if you just go to sharper image once and play around with roboquad you quickly discover that roboquad isn't really a robot, it is a remote control car with legs. A robot like that is like a bad actor, you always recognize the acting.
I looked on top and saw that the guy that started this thread bought pleo at $315. I got mine at $290. Watch the prices on this because odds are he is the best robot up to date. Thier could be a robot better than pleo like Aibo or I Cybie, but I never actually seen an Aibo or I Cybie. So pleo is the top of the heap seeing as Aibo and I Cybie arn't being sold anymore and still may not be as good as Pleo. Thier maybe a better one out thier and thier maybe such thing as Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny. I defy someone to find me a robot as good as Pleo. Can't be done! Yet I have to say i still hate Ugobe, but I got to give them props on Pleo, hes brilliant and perfection as I'm sure every intelligent person in here will agree.
