You need to get a WowWee Light Strike Intelligent Targeting System (laser tag component). They are relatively cheap ($10 on Amazon), and provide a lot of sensors for beginners (RGB LEDs, switches, DC motor, IR transmiter, IR receiver, 4 AA batteries; and room for plenty of enhancements/add-ons (new motherboard(brain), wireless connectivity, space for additional sensors to be added.

I am writing up my experience of turning an ITS into something unique.

If I am reading the technical information correctly, the cartridge could be be replaced with an SD cart in SPI mode. Is that correct?

Also, does anyone have the RFID dump for the little panda? I got a RoboPanda at Goodwill today but it has no Black cartridge or little plush panda

sevik said: Heh, it was really long ago :)) Cartridge pinout was on proboard forums. look at pictures: http://sevik.org/robopanda/emu_cart1.jpg http://www.robocommunity.com/gallery/13177/Gallery--RoboPanda-Postmortem/?ima... There are 5 pins used - GND - ground CS - chip select (active low) SCK - clock MISO - data output (from cartridge to panda) MOSI - data input (from panda to cartridge) If you have a scope - you can check who is who easily (without cartridge). CS will go low for whole read cycle, SCK will oscillate for ~30 cycles, MOSI will go high and low in non-so-regular pattern. MISO is input so it will be passive. There will be just several cycles after reset so you need digital storage scope. Or you can snoop for signals with cartridge inserted - they will do the same much longer, but MISO will be active too. I dont have a working emulator now, so I cant check pinout...

Robopanda uses only 03 command for standard SPI eeprom. SPI clock is 500 kHz.

It will not work with sdcards because they need specific initialization sequence and completely different command protocol.
