This is probably to late for anyone else. But Target's NCF (non-carry forward) toys have gone to 75% off, and this includes the Roboquad. This happened last week so probably by now they have sold out, sorry for telling you so late. But I did get one for $20! YES $20 brand-spanking new!

Well now i need some ideas as to what to do with this cool little guy.....i have read and thought about new LEDs, but ill do that while im doing something else. I would like to do something neat, but no to too hard..... Any ideas?

And I'm sorry to everyone about not getting on here soon enough to tell you about the $20 roboquads......but give me some good ideas and ill make it up to you.

i would love to give you ideas but i'm not a moder. But if you want to do this here anre a few possiblilities(CAUTION:Some may require soldering and knowledge of electronic devices)

  • Try putting on a battery monitor(look for GW Jax's article on that.
  • Try making a recharging connection it's pretty simple.  This way all you have to do is plug him and wait.
  • Finally for something real simple,  paint him and make him look absolutely awesome.
Hope you can find one you can do.  If you can't no prob neither can I!Laughing

install side sensors

install a small marque and have the quad pick random messages to display

install a RF transmitter instead of IR

Foot sensors

Talking and moving mouth with an arrray of leds.

IR booster

a 16x dvd burning laser for finding and popping ballons.

Add an EEPROM to hold more programming power.

inhance the guard mode with bright led display and sound track from an mp3 player.

and the list go's on.  GWJax

I am working on a lot of what I had suggested. But the real fun is to see who can do it first with an article..  GWJax

I can't believe this.  I went to Target almost every day religiously after Christmas in hopes for that 75% drop to get one of those two Roboquads left over.  Of course one of the few days I miss they happend to drop the price and they're gone.  Sometimes life just isn't fair...Frown

yea, i think i will be doing the RF transimitter.

and a "pimp-my-roboquad" with new paint, speakers, ipod dock (or onboard mp3 player)

I didnt know that laser from a DVD burrer was strong enough, I had thought about a laser, but the only ones i knew of that were strong enough were from the "green laser company" I dont know their real name but i wouldn't promote them even if i did, they are effing expensive.

January 15, 2008 5:36 PM

A 16x DVD laser has the power to pop a ballon and light a match with only 3 Volts power supply at close range. 2 to 6 inch I think. But having a quad find it with a ping mod attached to it, it could get close enough to pop it. but if it missed it will not harm anything at a distance. If you need help with your mods let me know. I don't believe in much moding.  I find RQ perfect as he is.

I'm looking forward to modding my RoboQuad however I don't know which route I'm going to go down. There's some discussion about hacking the RoboRemote into a sensor interface and I'm tempted to try and make an early version (i.e. before the RoboRemote is released). Good list of possible modifications here which only makes my decision more difficult.

On the burning dvd laser I've an old CD-RW kicking around somewhere, might rip it appart to see what the laser in that is capable of. EDIT: looking at the CD-RW it's a 16x/12x/40x and the laser is 785 +-10nm wavelength at 0.8mw reading power and 41mw max power. EDIT EDIT: So a 16x DVD Laser is more firmly in the Red Visible range (with 785nm in the near-infra-red) and has a power rating in the 200's of mw. only thing a 25mw 785nm might be good for is a barely visable laser pointer.

Cgodwin: If you have not seen my LED mod take a look at my website http://robosapienv2-4mem8.page.tl/Roboquad-----.htm Or here http://www.robocommunity.com/article/11536/How-I-Replaced-Roboquad-s-Eyes-and...

More mods to come on RQ.

People yearn after this robotic dream, but you can't strip your life of all meaning, emotion and feeling and expect to function.

yes, i have read your article on the LED mod on both sites, very nice job.

I have an article I wrote on how to make RQ do the electric slide.  It's still in the moderating stage so keep an eye out for it this week.

Robo BG, I can't wait to try it. I love the Electric slide. Did you try to attach a small mp3 player to its speakers while playing the music, as you watch him do the slide? That would be great. GWJax

Do you mean to RQ's speakers or iPod speakers?

How would I hook up the ipod to RQ's speakers?

Plug in a phono jack to the IPOD and wire it to the speaker. Or if you want to get fancy then wire in an input phono jack and drill a hole in the top or side of the quad where you would have enough room and connect the wire to the speaker. Then all you have to do is plug in your jumper phono jack wires to the quad and the ipod. Thats it! A very simple mod that I know you could do just with a few pictures posted. GWJax

BG & GW you guys are freakin geniuses!! :)

Is there anything you guys can't do??

I really gotta learn a lot from y'all.

Damn the expense

Thank you for saying that!  I don't find myself that smart but thanks alot!

I might be smarter in creativity than in intelect.  Although it is strange I'm a kid and I have a virtual stock portfolio.  Maybe I am smart.  Thanks anyway Bender!

You know I keep thinking over if it would be possible to hook up a MP3 dock cable somehow to the speaker.  The plug the ipod in.

Or you could just play music in the background (that's the simple way out!)

Yes you could connect a jump line into the Quad or any other Bot wih a speaker but it does require dirlling and opening up the bot to get to the spk wires and for a clean look. I know I'm going to attach the input plug connector to mine. When I'm finnished I'll post a pic to see if you like what it looks like. GWJax

ps. BG, did your article come out yet for the electric slide?
