These cute little critters are swarming in from CES 2008. A new thing in Wow Wee's line up and man these little guys are hopping. Two touch sensors and they interact with other robos. Not sure if that means just amongst themselves or completely other Wow Wee robos like Roboquad. They can climb over each other and everything what do you guys say? You like these new insects?

Not my cup of robotic tea.

It is a nice throwback to Mark Tilden's early days of beambots and biobugs

I made some of the first, but never bothered with the second.

Wanted to post a quick...  "Check out our brief feature on the bug bots."

Also we'll be publishing more info on these guys as you all tell us they're important to you. In general, that's our approach. If everyone wants more, we'll try to get you more. We're anxious to see which of the new 2008 product line gets people the most excited.

I think these guys are pretty cool.

I quite like these little guys. As MrScott said, a throwback to BEAM days,  without the solar panels. I may pick up one or two for my son, hopefully he'll get over wanting to play with my BEAMbots.

I really like the tank tread version, it's just funny to me.

Watch out, don't step in the anthropomorphization.

Not my cup o tea either, you either like them or you don't, I don't. Sorry.

I never got into the solar panels bit of beam but I loved the concept and adapted it to a simple bot or two. I was in the process of continually upgrading one robot with no clear goal or end in sight so to have a simple bot "completed" was great, even if it wasn't as much of an achievement as my other robot(s). I didn't really get a look at the bio bugs first time around and doubt I'd be looking to buy their newest siblings, unless they were on sale that is. Who can turn down a cheap platform with two motors, gearboxed and possibly a few salvagable components.

I'm curious enough about the 'swarming' behavior- is it more complex than a simple bump sensor putting them into reverse? We recently got two little bug things from Radio Shack that run forward; they have two touch sensor antenna, but all it does is put the motor into reverse, causing a random amount of turning, then they go forward again. They have microphone, so a clap can put them into reverse as well. As i recall, those were around $10 also; but they have no complicated ICs, just a small transistor net like the BEAM bots.

We'll probably get  a few for the kids to play with, but I don't see them getting played with much after the first couple of days.

What I like about them is that they're relatively inexpensive ($10 isn't bad) and that they come in two different types.  I like the prospect of the tread models climbing all over each other, and that they respond to your touch.  I know they have touch sensors but I'm not sure about any IC's or anything like that.

When we find out more about how they interact with each other, we'll definitely post information.  I'd really like to get my grubby little hands on a few of 'em and get some video, too...

Yeah I really do wan't to check these little critters out.  We'll just have to keep each other posted as Wow Wee comes out with more information.  Later!

These robots look interesting. I will definetly buy them both when I see then later on in the UK.

I am wondering what it means by it interacts with other robos.  Does it mean only other bugbots or also RSv2 and RSM and RQ?

my sister and i might get one of these Cool

January 15, 2008 4:59 PM

I don't think they interact "directly" with other WowWee robots (like the FemiSapien and RSV2, for example) - but if I find outmore, I'll post it.

What I do think, though, is that the robots that can detect motion and objects may be affected by a BugBot (or multiple BugBots) that is/are zipping around.  Could be a fun experiment!

hm, yes! If the BugBot emitted the IR signal that V2 recognizes, the V2 should *attempt* to follow it- should be amusing!

I would like to see Roboquad get annoyed with it and start attacking it!

See, Roboquad really does need a mouth! How about putting tiny neodymium magnets on the backs of the bugs and a steel plate on RQs belly- then he can run around and 'catch' them!

I dunno. Seems more like he'd be getting infested with vermin to me. Surprised

When the bugs jump on _you_, you're not catching bugs, they're catching you.
