I took a whack at documenting the interaction between the RSV2 and the RoboRaptor. You've probably seen the scripted interaction before in other videos, but I tried to do it a little more cinematically than I've previously seen. It's good practice for honing my clip splicing skills.

Much nicer than the majority of videos (mine included).

What program(s) did you use? I've been having bad luck with Windows Movie Maker, every time I try doing something with the timeline editor it freezes then crashes (PIV @ 2999MHz, XP SP2). It is really annoying, since I have to reboot to get to winders, then run some conversion thing because my camera only records in quicktime which WMM won't load.

All the different Linux softwares I've played with seem to lack some feature or another, except Cinelerra, which has more features than I can stand to look at.

Watch out, don't step in the anthropomorphization.

It looks like Windows Movie Maker to me.

Have you installed all the updates for Windows Movie Maker? I've had a bit of instability, but usually only working with large video files.

I haven't tried video editing under linux for a long time.

Should be current WMM. About a month old install of XP from recovery CD with all patches and updates from windowsupdate thingy a couple weeks ago.

How large is large? I threw a ~320MB .avi at it. Any suggestions for something to compress the avi first? Stuff I've played with so far seems to screw up the audio layer timing.

This is all my first ever attempt at playing with video. My normal, still digital camera can snag ~30 minutes of video on it's 2GB card. I really should just break down and pick up a cheapie DV cam so I can use "regular" DV software.

I used Windows MovieMaker to assemble all my clips. Not a high power, high feature editor, but serviceable for simple splicing of scenes.

In this case I didn't mess with the audio at all. Each clip is just the native audio for the accompanying video. That's easier to do with actors that parrot back their lines and actions exactly the same each time. Spielberg, eat your heart out!

I recorded the sequence from behind Raptor shoulder, behind RSV2 shoulder, Raptor closeup, and RSV2 closeup. After that it was just a matter of trimming the edges of the various clips and butting them up against each other at the appropriate cues.

The only glitch I had was that the first time I tried to record the Raptor closeup, it toggled to the alternate end behavior. Maybe I need to do an "outtakes" or "deleted scenes". Either that, or a Director's Cut with alternate ending. Tongue out

I've had an awful time with WMM locking up, too. I've learned to save early, save often. It doesn't kill my machine. I can use Task Manager to kill the process and restart it.

that was great! it looked like roboqua...opps.

robosapien was really interacting with roboraptor. i mean, like it wasn't just something going by.

As roboquad steps left, his head turns right.
As roboquad steps right, his head turns left.
As roboquad is walking, my dog freaks out.

The RSV2 actually is interacting with the RoboRaptor, especially at the end of the clip when it turns its head as the RoboRaptor veers to the side.  After the dialog plays out, the RSV2 is back in its normal scanning mode. It will react to sound and motion. It's particularly sensitive to IR sources, such as the RoboRaptor in its roam mode.

When the RoboRaptor wandered by, the RSV2 reacted to its motion, and turned its head to watch. The "Hey, were did it go." response is a standard phrase for the RSV2 when it has lost sight of something it was tracking.

Nice video. I had wondered how the interaction skits would pan out, since I don't have any of the bots which RSV2 can interact with I just ignored them.

Here's the blooper reel footage. It's the alternative script ending that sometimes plays out.

A happy ending, but not nearly as much drama.

One item of note, check out the glowing nostril at the end of the RoboRaptor snout.

It's an interesting side effect of digital cameras that infrared signals that are invisible to the naked eye are often quite noticeable in recorded images. It's this strobing light that I think catches the attention of the RSV2 as the Raptor struts around.

What he said. I got a digital camera for Cristmas, and have a Robopet. In the playback, I saw blue lights on his "eyes".
