It doesn't cover this robots features very well but we get a first real look at Wowwee's teleprescence product.

I don't believe Mr Personality has any teleprescence ability, It seems to have no camera, it may or may not have a microphone. There has also been no suggestion that Mr Personality can be controlled from a remote location (like say, the Rovio).

Its a pity, I think a Mr Personality type platform, coupled with the features in the Rovio, would be quite interesting.

Anybody know whether those arms are powered, poseable, or just bolted in one position?

I'd like to know more about that little display, too. I wonder if it's general purpose, or whether it's some sort of restricted function LCD that just cycles through the face combinations.

I agree with Nocturnal that the form factor of this robot is appealing for the pseudo-humanoid robot lovers. I'm afraid it might have comprised on the onboard smarts. No mention of capabilities is usually not a good sign.

Could be either, but from the look of it, any powered motion will probably be limited to the shoulder, the elbows and arms look to small to squeeze one of WowWee's normal motors into.

I believe I read somewhere that you are supposed to be able to create personalities and give it new faces, which would suggest that the LCD is general purpose (unless I imagined it in a fevered dream).

"Feature of the Mr. Personality include 7 motors, 4 iR sensors, color LCD screen, 64MB integrated memory, speaker, SD card slot, audio in and requires 6 C size batteries. "

3 motors for the wheels, that leave 4 for other things.

Right at the very end of the video, he tilted his pelvis (?) forward while keeping the torso upright- that looks like 2 joints, but could be done with one motor if you don't give him the capability to lean forward. Then a bit earlier he tilted his head down, so there goes another motor.

That leaves 2 (or maybe just one).

not impressed

I agree with josiah, in fact his face creeps me out a little, and whats the use of buying a expensive, yet not fully functional robot?

As of what I saw in the video, On the lower left corner looks like a remote and also it looks like a remote in on his back too. I love the speed of it and using uni-directional wheels, as of the head moving it might have some sort of sensor in it, If it does it's small. I can't wait to get my tools on this one. Incorporating the RoboQuads leg system with the body. Now that would be cool. GWJax

Check the video in Hands on with Mr Personality if you want to see the remote.

IR Sensors are in the top of the visor and a mic in a small hole in the mouth area and sensors in the ears Just like the V2. after reviewing the vdeo again. GWJax

when he is released couln't you hack him and add more motors to power the arms.  Unless tiny motors wouldn't be strong enough.

January 27, 2008 5:05 PM

Tiny motors probably wouldn't be strong enough, the other problem is that if you add to much weight you may cause him to become unbalanced and fall over a lot.

What about muscle wire? Is that possible? Muscle wire can lift somewhat loads.

I want this thread to start again.

Any news lately on Mr. Personality? He was listed as coming out this summer. I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to be impressed with TRi-bot lately, then I remembered this guy.

With all this: "..7 motors (his upper arms and waist move), 4 iR sensors, color LCD screen, 64MB integrated memory, speaker, SD card slot, audio in," and new personalities to download, he seems like everything I think Tribot should have been! Plus SD card slot should help make him pretty hackable.

I hope they come out with different personalities fast though, his default is creepy. I would love to be able to make my own faces and animations for it!

Here's a higher quality version of the video above.

You could make his lower arms move with creative cableing and ducting. Mount the motor on his back then run some cables in through his shoulders and down to the forearm. Connect the cable to a mount on one side of the elbow joint and attach a spring to the other side of the elbow joint and to the base of the upperarm.

That way the cable pulls the forearm down, the spring lifts it back up. It wouldn't really have any lifting power, but at least the forearms would move.

...or use two coordinated cables to tug the arm in either direction. That's what your biceps and triceps, and their tendons, do for your forearm.
