Any chance we can get rid of the ads that make sounds when you run your mouse over them? I'm getting really sick of my pc going "Hello!" all the time, and the disjointed bits of music are just annoying.

Hello Nocturnal and milw,
I noticed this ad yesterday (the "smiley" ad) and it has been removed from the ad network.
If you see anything else that needs to be addressed that we haven't caught, or if this ad shows up again, please send me a PM and I will address it immediately. I will continue to keep my eyes open.
Have a great weekend,
Pete

Can you tell me why there are ads on this site in the first place. I have been finding viruses on my pc and I think htat some may have come from some of the ads. I can understand advertising for wow wee but you have thos advertisements that show a grey box that says, " Would you like to block junk email" or ones that say click here to block spam emails and those advertisements are the ones I here give viruses. I am just wondering.
Well, there's no such thing as a free lunch; the advertisers pay for the RoboCommunity, in effect. Otherwise, you'd probably have to buy a membership in order to be able to post images etc.

Eastercia...
Great question. Thanks for asking. As you know, Capable Networks stays in business through advertising sales revenue. It's how we are able to bring you sites like RoboCommunity. So, advertisement on the site will always be a part of what we do here.
We are always experimenting with new advertising partners, ad networks, and the like, which is where some of the recent ads on RoboCommunity are coming from. We have joined a new ad network that literally has thousands of ads in its rotation. We have done our best to filter out any really obnoxious ads, and continue to do so. For instance, I have had our ad trafficking team remove 5 ads from the site just this week, because I (or another user) stumbled upon them and deemed them inappropriate or too obnoxious for the site. One of the ones I had nuked was the obnoxious smiley "hey!" ad.
That said, there should absolutely be no viruses hidden in ANYTHING on the site. If you discover an ad linking to malicious software or anything even remotely similar, please take a screenshot of the ad, and email it to us. We will deal with those quickly and decisively. We will not tolerate the presence of malicious software on the site.
Thanks for being patient with us while we experiment with these ad networks / partners. We're doing our best to bring you the best service / community possible, and this is all part of that process.

Well, they have to pay for this stuff somehow :) Capable Networks is a business, and as all businesses they're trying to make money. The ads are about the only way a website like this can generate any revenue since there's not a subscription option at this point.
Viruses come from anywhere and everywhere. If one is using an operating system that is susceptible to such things, one really needs to use a good anti-virus software. If one is using a big-name cable provider (for example, I use Charter, my Mom uses T/W RoadRunner) they provide a decent anti-virus software, for free, to their subscribers. I imagine bigger phone companies do the same. If not using those providers there are still many options, but don't trust Windows built-in av software by itself, add something else. Also, one needs to make sure one runs a firewall between one's pc and the outside world to close up useless, open ports. The built-in Windows firewall works, adding a second hardware firewall between the modem and router is even better. All my computers have two firewalls between them and the intarweb.
Okay, done with my little rant now.
Watch out, don't step in the anthropomorphization.
Then can we loose the horizontal ad with the bunny going back and forth banging his drum, the one where you get the drum banning sound when you scroll over it. Can we also loose the obnoxious 'WINNER WINNER WINNER You have won a free laptop" flashing ad. I could also do without the vertical ad, I can't recall all the details, I think it was a mobile phone, there was a video of a rock band playing music on the screen, if you scrolled over it, you get a burst of music.
Oh, I like the "Welcome Internation CES Visitors, Start Here", its a nice touch. But if they are like me, they learned to tune out all but the most annoying ads long ago.
Hello Nocturnal -
We are keeping our eyes open for all of the ads that you mentioned, and are working to resolve them. Any duplicates that we see, such as the "smileys," will be taken care of as they rear their ugly heads!
Thanks again for staying on top of everything!

Run FireFox, add the Ad On "AdBlock Plus". Most ads will go away, and you can block most others. Faster page load times.

Thanks. I haven't seen the add for junk email or spam in a while. Maybe you already got rid of it. as for the adds you mentioned nocternal, I haven't seen any of those except for the smiley one. I had an idea. I am a member of another site (brainbashers.com) and it has a lot of games on it. Normaly you see adds when you play the game but the sitee is set up so that if you give a donation of ten dollars you can reieve a cookie that removes the adds for one year. Maybe we could use a method like that. If you don't like the adds then you give a donation and the cookie you recieves tells the site not to show you the adds. Then again, this site is larger than brainbashers. Oh well, just a thought.
We're doing our best to weed out the obnoxious ads when we see them. Thanks for helping us do so. Certainly hope it doesn't come to a point where people feel they need to block the ads (that is what keeps the site afloat, you know).
Just to flesh out Eastercia's point... Who would vote for some kind of paid membership that eliminated ads on the site? Would you join is such a program existed? Do you think one should exist?
Thanks all.
This was not my idea. It is the way another site I know of works. I think the site should remain free. I am sure that more people than just the members of this site come and visite robo community. I do think that if you are a member you can have the option to pay to have the adverts removed (for just you.) This could work by having some kind of flag put on to your account that stops the adverts for a certain amount of time and then you would pay agian and the adverts would go away again. No, I would not join such a sistem becasue the adverts do not bother me. But is is a solution for others who hate the adverts. Like I said, the site I got this from has it so if you pay 10 dollars you recieve a cookie that lets you "skip" the adverts page on your way to the games for one year. BTW: There are other ways for the site to make money. Could try having some sort of online shop that anyone can buy from to support the site. Could sell wow wee merchendise and other things robot related.

I'm glad you seem to have nailed all the ones that bothered me.

Not me, no, not unless you were offering a lot more than just a forum.
Thanks for your feedback on this, Nocturnal - glad to hear we've been blasting the noisy ads out of the rotation. As always, keep us in the loop if you see any more.

As I said before, but no one seems to have caught it....
You can get rid of all ads. Use Firefox instead of IE. Use the AdBlock Plus AddOn. No more ads. And just not here, but on almost all web sites.
I'm sure Capable Networks doesnt want to hear this, many sites do not. But I'm not going to go through any of their ads, nor click on one. But a lot of slowness in loading web pages is that the web server serving up ads can be bogged down from too much traffic, which slows rendering the full page until the ad server is free to send its stuff. Hack that part out of the data being sent to your web browser, and it doesn't go looking for the ads.

You provide the necessary eyeballs per ad ratio needed to keep Capable Networks funded and RoboCommunity a resource that doesn't require an annual fee.
Those of us with AdBlock thank you.

Out of curiosity Eastercla, what do you run that FF isn't available?
