Switch

 LAME

If you can use it on your OS (it compiles on most platforms), I'd recommend LAME first. It's kind of a standard in *nix mp3 conversion. Famous even.

Switch works well too, with a big freakin GUI, windows only.

I've used "Super" for mangling multimedia clips of various sorts.

It will pull a sound track out of a video clip and generate an mp3.

newnhamrs4,

I found another converter for you and it is also a pretty handy audio mixing tool, it also adds effects and can save to different file formats. But best of all it's free!! It's called Audacity and you can download at this link.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

Hope it helps, Cheers

Last time I checked you had to download an addition dll to use audacity with mp3's

don't you need an .mp3 codec on your system to convert a different format to .mp3 anyway?

i think so, im trying to find a mp3 converter. A bit of software FOR FREE that converts wav. files into mp3.

And buy free i mean free, not a trial version. full blooded, bells and wistles, jobby.

LAME (Lame Ain't an Mp3 Encoder) Free as in beer, not positive about license but I think it's free too. Source available will compile on most every system. Binaries available from third parties for most every system, hit link and scroll down (#Binaries anchor doesn't seem to work). Simplest usage would be "lame inputfilename.wav outputfilename.mp3"

For Windows Switch works well. Free as in beer, they hope you'll buy the Plus version if you like it. Follow link, click "Windows Download". The installer will try to get you to install some of their other software (also free), but it's not required. Just uncheck all the boxes and continue. It also seems to work pretty well under Wine in Linux.

Watch out, don't step in the anthropomorphization.

Who you callin' a "chap"!  Tongue out

As I stated above, I've used Super. It came in handy to rip the soundtrack out of FLV files from YouTube.
