I guess it depends upon what you mean by male and female.
Given that these are ChatBots being discussed, how do you determine what gender you consider them to be? You've got text messages that are interpreted by the reader as gender clues.
A dirty old man in a chat room might claim to be a 12 year old girl, but that doesn't make it so.
From a biological perspective, things are not always what they seem, either. I personally know people who started life in one gender wrapper, and underwent pharmaceutical and surgical procedures to step across "the line" to the other side. What does that make these people? Were they one gender, in an errant package that they had corrected, or were they a different gender at different times in their lives?
Is it a matter of chromozomes, secondary sexual characteristics, or internalized body image that defines a person's gender?
Then there are biological males who prefer biological males, and biological females who prefer biological females.
Is an AI that appears to prefer the company of one gender to be assumed to be of the opposite gender?
Or is it a programming equivalent of Nature Versus Nurture? Is an AI inherently gender specific, or does it evolve that way as it's "life" experiences are incorporated into the behaviors?
Heady stuff, to be sure.
My GPS is a woman. She has a woman's vocal tone and timbre. She never chooses the route that I want to take. She nags me if I don't go the way she expects me to go. She'll reluctantly figure out a new route, but half the time it's just a set of back roads to get me back on the route I don't want to take.
I, on the other hand, am a male. I generally ignore her suggestions, and do what I want until I am unsure of the next turn. Then I'll expect her to know where we are, and begrudge her not knowing how to get from where I am to where I want to be.
