I love love *LOVE* all the video people are making, and we absolutely want to make it easier for you to share video with the community.  To that end, we created a YouTube button  on the editor toolbar that allows you to snag the ID of the YouTube video and post it directly to the site.

Here's the button on the simple (default) toolbar...

Here's the button on the advanced toolbar (change to the advanced toolbar in your user profile)...

Any questions / comments?  I'm all ears.  Also, let me know if you find this useful.

There are tons of informative and hilarious videos.

My question is:

Should we set up separate threads for robot videos, or should we embed them all over the place?

When you are "in the mood to look at robot videos" do you want them all in one thread, or is it ok if they are scattered all over the community?

I like the idea of a specific placde for videos.  Would make it eisier to find the ones you want to watch.

I have  a comment.

It didn't work.

At least it didn't work for me when I wanted to embed an air muscle YouTube video in a recent post.

When I tried it, I got a large Video object in the post, but the video didn't load. Right mousing over the block caused a popup to display with the stippled text "Video not Loaded".

Just exactly what is supposed to be pasted into the URL field of the embed dialog? I tried grabbing the Location URL from a tab that was showing the video. I also tried grabbing the reference from the "to embed" field on the tab showing the YouTube video.

MrScott:

You asked the right question: what you paste into the url field is just the movie's Youtube ID.

I'll give you an example:

here is the Url of the Youtue PAGE showing Mark tilden's  video roboquad:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=GxRM1P7vxJ...

but the only part of this that is the video ID is between the "=" and the "&"

so the video ID to paste in is GxRM1P7vxJw

try it again, and let me know if it works now.

And that, as they say, is that!

It worked as advertised once the appropriate video id string was pasted into the embed dialog.

It might save some others time if a help text explicitly stated to pick up the YouTube URL reference string starting just after the "v=" sign.

Even your example, quoted just above, is not as clear as you might think. That's due to the particular forum display software auto-truncating the names of URL long references to "blah_blah_blah...". Once the "..." kick in, you lose the direct readability of a URL reference. The link is still good, the name of the link has just been truncated.

Eastercla:

Here is my take:

there are lots of times when it makes sense to embed a video IN THE CONTEXT of a whole thread of text posts.

And there are other times when a video just stands on its own.

We could create a thread just for videos and see if it "takes root."

Do you have videos you would post.... to help get it going?

Eric: I like this idea of a seperate thread for video's to keep them all in one place and have different catagories for the video's. GREAT IDEA ERIC/JEFF

So far I have seen two new suggestions that we will (and should) try:

 a) a suggestion for a book discussion thread (mini reviews about robotics books people are reading, both fiction and non-fiction)

b) a thread for general youtube like videos (especially for the videos that don't easily or automatically fit into other ongoing discussions.

Anything else?

I created threads for both videos and books in the "General Robotics" forum.

Have you got anything to post there?

MrScott has done a FANTASTIC article on how to upload pictures, and utilize YouTube videos.

Check it out here:
