SO far all the robosapiens have been guys, or at least, thats what we pass them off as when we refer to them as him and he. So, anyone think that wow wee might make girl robosapiens, you know, with a female voice and some different sayings.

I read talk of plans for a female RoboSapien variation at one point. I think it was shelved when marketing couldn't get a satisfactory answer to the question

"Do little girls play with robots?"

The unspoken assumption being that  boys wouldn't play with a girl robot.

As a toy and hobbiest robot collector, I'd welcome a female variation. They're relatively rare in both genres. The only two I can think of in  significant cinematic settings are the robot from Metropolis, and the Terminatrix from T3- Rise of the Machines. There was also Rosie from The Jetsons.

Some other female robots were incidental props and characters. There's TC-14 serving drinks to the Jedis from Star Wars Episode 1. There were the fembots from Austin Powers.

I was thinking that an  'easy' way to generate female personalities for RS Media, would be to have one of the Mac OSX female voices read a text file. They still sound pretty wierd tho, not real attractive. Anyway, since Media has something over 200 sayings, it would be handy to have them all as lines in a text file, and easy to change them to suit the personality.

WowWee makes the roboPet in a range of colors, including pink to appeal to girls I think. They would just need a slightly different shape chest piece and colors to make female V2s and Medias.

I think the views on female looking robots is the problem.  Maybe this is wrong, but the 2 images I get when I think of a female robot is either a maid or a sexual icon.  Both of which don't suit the younger audiences.  That doesn't mean there is no future for them as toys.  Its just harder to make em work out.  I think the mature theme is the real obstacle of the two.  I dont think parents would want to buy something for their kids that looks like it is on the kinky side.  And there is no real market for robots to girls atm.  There may be a big market potential here.  But then again, maybe past attempts could have all been flops.  But robots for girls do exist in large numbers.  They just dont look like robots.  They are often in the form of dolls or plush pets and animals.

Since robots will one day populate every aspect of your life, its a good idea to make friends with all of them. Otherwise your shower bot might decide to play around with the water temperature while you are showering...

Indeed, there's an untapped market for girls and toy robots... But that doesn't exclude girls from playing with existing robots!

Fastenjaw's right though -- a lot of "female robots" are designed to be and end up as subservient beings (like maids or just plain weak) or even sexualized in fantasic way -- definitely not for children.

In your opinions, what do you think would make a girl want to play with robots? How can toys in the robotic world be made more appealing to young girls who are encouraged to play with dolls and plush toys without disguising them with hair, makeup and plush fur? Is it all about the marketing or is it about how the parents introduce the ideas of robots into a child's play?

It was just an idea.  When ever I thought of it I was thinking something similar to barbie or something like that.  Maybe just make it pink and change the voice and sayings.

I was thinking that really it would be impossible to create a girl robosapien because wowwee refers to robosapien as a caveman and really i think a cavewoman would sound really silly maybe girls should play with the rs media and program a girl voice into it

Eastercla -- I think it's a great idea! I just wanted to get your opinions on how to encourage more girls to get into robots and electronics. I just think there is a shortage of girls in the science realm...!

Oh, in that case.  I just thought chancing the color, voice, and sayings would be encouraging enough as far as the rs goes.  As for the over all field of electronics and robotics I don't realy know how to encourage them.  I think that is more of a madder of preference.  You know, like, what do you like to work with more, circuit boards and programming, or something else.

consider my entry: Robosapien, hmm Cyborg

The RS Media would still be a guy, but

with a ships A.I. named Cortana also in his head.  the Master chief, truly has a feminine side
