Would you rather buy one of Wowwee's robots or a lego mindstorm

Both.

I bought two Mindstorms several years ago. One for each of my kids that were interested.

I recently bought the RoboSapien V2, and have been leant the Lego IR tower for experimenting with broadcasting PC control to the robot.

I think the MovIt line of hobbiest robots were more instructive in mechanics and  programming than the MindStorm set at the time. I have a WAO that has a 4 bit processor and uses bumpers to find its way around. You can program it to be a wall hugging maze solver, or reconfigure it to detect and avoid table edges.

oh another Dad, great! My now 12 yr old boy got the RIS 2 a few years ago, and I got myself the NXT last summer. We've done some smallish projects with them but nothing too astounding.

So to answer the original question, you can do a lot more different kinds of things with the MindStorms, but if you really want to get your hands into the electronics and learn something, then I think hacking a RoboSapien may be more satisfying.

I never even thought about hacking my robots until I joined the robo community. It's a cool idea but it sounds like a big job, I don't know if I would have enough persistance for it.

We have a NXT, and I love it!  So, who's posting the Lego Mindstorm NXT vs Robosapien video?

I like them both.  One could actually combine the two without actually interfacing them.   The NXT could be hung on his back to send back data to your PDA or computer!  Both the RS's and Mindstorms have a lot of potential limited only by skill and imagination.
