Mine one the box say Supertech. Same box, remote etc as the Flytech one. 2 sets of wings, but unlike the Flytech one both are the same, whereas the Flytech one is advistised as having a spear set of wings that look like dragonfly wings.

Also that maybe the reason the eyes don't indicate anything.

I have also noticed that the button that meant to say expert beginner there is no way to tell if your in expert mode or Beginner as it's not marked. The eyes indicate nothing.

Also trying to charge it with full charge there is no way it tells, or lets you know when it's fully charged.

On the Flytech, recharging with a low battery, you see the eyes pulse until it is finished charging- then the eyes are completely off. So if you're trying to recharge with it already full, the eyes wouldn't light up. the beginner mode is the left position of the switch, expert to the right (when you're holding the remote with the antenna pointing away from you).

Any chance you could post some pix of yours? What color and what frequency is it on?

cheers- Scott

Be careful because there are counterfeit dragonflies out there under the name Supertech -- sounds like you bought one of them, denodan...

Check out my blog: The WowWee Insider.

jeez, that didn't take long... what is the world coming to? Cry

No surprise there. If you were an unscrupulous factory owner, it would probaly only take a day or two upon receiving a Dragonfly, to be able to counterfit it. The hardest part would probaly be the expert/beginner switch (not as standard feature on R/C setups as far as I know), and that wouldn't take long to figure out.

Unfortunately, even if they are manufacturing to the same level of quality as WowWee (and thats a big if), they can still afford to sell it for less and make the same or greater profit. No developement cost to recoup, and no marking costs. I wouldn't be surprised to discover they had scimped on the battery though.

Dragonfly's are on the easy side of things to counterfiting.

Counterfitters and Spammers have their own special level of hell.

The packaging even looks identical- so are they doing midnight runs on WowWee's molds (for body foam and package plastic) or did they whip up their own cheapy molds? I suppose there's no good way to organize a boycott either.

If they bought one, I wouldn't think it would be to hard to make moulds of the existing parts (it certainly doesn't have a high part count) and replicate the packaging. It could of course be the same moulds, I seem to recall that the first counterfeit reproductions of the robosapiens were done by a factory that had at some point been involved in producion the actual thing (though that could just be internet rumours).

The identical packaging and look is important to the counterfeiter, if it looks different, they wouldn't be able to use all that advertising WowWee pays for to sell their counterfiet products. As I said, special hell.

Here is the fake one.

In the adds by Flytech it says you can climb, dive etc, with this one it won't climb and seems you have to throw it like a dart to get it flying.

There seems no lift, when you turn it loses alitutde.

May 30, 2007 1:26 PM

Yep, it's a clone.  Yet again, some far eastern company is ripping off a WowWee design.  I talked with them, and they are exploring legal action... especially given that sites are putting these things up for sale with pictures of the real dragonfly on them.  *gulp*

Frankly, hope they nail them to the wall!  It drives me crazy the way companies "cheat" like this.

May 30, 2007 1:40 PM

No kidding. This is awful... But in the end, it benefits us, the community. Think about it...

Wowwee gets profit from super-awesome product. Super-awesome product is ripped off by counterfitters. Wowwee sues counterfitters. Wowwee gets large sum of money from winning in court. Wowwee uses money to create super-awesome product V2. Community gets super-awesome product V2.

Everyone wins in the end, exept the counterfitters, who get their own special counterfit heaven... that looks just like hell.

I'm the kind of person who finds bad spelling and grammar from a big company hilarious, and this made my fall to the floor laughing! Flytaste?!

I love this plan ... as long as the laws of the country said counterfeiters live in support your way of thinking.  Too much of this goes on inside countries that WANT their companies to rip off US and other companies.

It's a form of commercial warfare.  Hope WowWee indeed wins.

May 30, 2007 2:29 PM

Denodan, does your manual have a website or support number? Best of luck with it, I can only suggest swapping the wings to see if the other set is better...

I agree with Geo.  If wow wee sues and wins they will have all that extra money and either the current products will drop in price or it will speed up the release date of the roboboa, roboquad, and the rs media because wow wee techinicaly is not paying to get it to where it goes so techinicaly the company would not have to wait to get enough money to ship mass quantities of these products.

May 30, 2007 2:52 PM

Assuming WowWee wins, assuming WowWee gets more than the cost of the legal battle and assuming WowWee gets more money out of the company than they would have ended up with if the consumers had bought from WowWee in the first place.

I think the first one is going to be problem enough, let alone the last two. It does not benifit us, the consumer. It encourages companies to make their products harder to counterfeit, which in turn makes it harder for people who wish to hack said products. It leads to products that have "No user servicable parts". It makes companies less forthcoming with techincal details about their products. It makes companines only release technical specs about their products to people who have signed a pile of legal documents (and occasionaly forked over wads of cash). Does anyone recall a time when you opened up an electronic product and found inside a complete schematic?

There is no positive to this.

Oh I forgot to mention, companies subjected to repeated counterfeiting have a tendancy to increase prices of their products to compensate for lost revenue.

The only ones who could possibly 'win' will be the lawyers... by the time any action gets taken, the damage will already be done. Let's just hope WowWee is already ahead in the race with the next version

The fake one is very poor, and seems to have no lift and when you turn crashes. You have to accually throw it like a dart to get it to fly good, but the Flytech adds say you can either dip or gain altitude, with the fake you cannot, and does not lauch from a smoot surface like the Flytech one meant to, so don't think the fake has the same lift as the real one.

The guy has offered that I send it back and will refund my money, which I will as not impressed at all, cannot gain any altitude what so ever, can only do level flight and crashes to easily as it cannot gain any height.

May 31, 2007 4:16 AM

I can't believe they have the cheek to use the Wowwee demonstration video! Ripping a product is one thing but they are blatently trying to trick people into thinking its the same product as the flytech! Does anyone know what countries are they being produced/sold in and does Wowwee have their genuine product available in those countries?

May 31, 2007 8:55 PM

Ok I was wrong but, does that mea that the v3 v4 and the other many wow wee robots we may see in the future will be ever so harder to get into and modify?

June 2, 2007 9:26 AM

Probably not, the more complex something is, the harder it is to copy. I'm not aware of any counterfeit V2's or RS Media's (doesn't mean they don't exist). Both of which contain complex elements, somewhat difficult to duplicate cheaply.

And cheap products for large prices is what counterfitters are all about.

 But seriously, Flytaste?!

June 2, 2007 10:49 AM

By using the name dragonfly it would not be to hard for wow wee to take them to court because wow wee can say they stole the name and the proof would be on the packaging.  Also, a name like that is probably stupid on purpose so people browsing the net see an add for it and click it just to see what has such a bad name.  Then they see the dragonfly after clicking the add.

Laws are not the same everywhere, nor are trademarks and copyright applied the same way the world over. I doubt these people will be based anywhere that it is easy to sue.
