*Laughs* I'll definately be interested in this contest, specifically, last time I looked, the RS Media won't run Java code that hasn't been signed by WowWee.
I'll stick to programming him in C, my Java is a bit rusty.
I do not have much experience with programming the RS Media, but I'm sure there are those out there who do. Since JavaOne is sponsoring a programming contest, I thought I'd ask to see if I could get some of our more experienced RS Media programmers to give me some info, share experiences, etc.
Who's in the know and has something to share?

It looks a little something like this
Installation path: /lnk/Java/User/Calibrator2.jar
Retval = 100 / 100
1.0... is the version
Unknown... is the vendor
The game is not WOWWEE certified.
"The Netbeans Robot module development SDK will be available at the contest booth"
Finding someone who is attending would definately be a good thing.
I posted this in another conversation, and forgot to mention it here. I know y'all will be interested in hearing that........
Nocturnal... I agree it would be great to find someone. So, that's my call to the community.... Anyone know a guy? :-)I chatted with Davin Sufer, CTO of WowWee, today, and he cleared up the issue about the signed vs. unsigned code with the RS Media. Here's the scoop...
The RS Media bots that shipped in 2006 did NOT run unsigned code. Officially, they run embedded Java, but do not fully support Java applets. The latest models of the RS Media (sold in 2007 -- including those that will be sold at the JavaOne show and all the models sold in the US and around the world going forward) DO fully support Java software. This includes unsigned code.
Davin also made clear that support in WowWee bots for user-defined code will only increase over time.
So, I'm pretty pumped that WowWee is continually improving their support of the creative types that would gen up their own code, and about the contest WowWee's sponsoring at JavaOne for Java developers specifically. Anyone thinking of attending the conference and participating?
How can I check whether my RS Media supports unsigned Java-Midlets? And if he doesn't, will there be a way to later upgrade the RS Medias Firmware?
I'm also thrilled to see what will come out of the programming contest.
I'd also like to write some Java-Apps for the RS Media, but unfortunately I've got some more important stuff to do currently.
Thats exactly what I want to know. Where's the firmware update that allows the RS Media to run unsigned java apps? So is this a case of WowWee punishing early adopters of their products?
Perhaps RoboCommunity should run their own Java programming contest *Laughs*
There'd only be a couple of entries
, hopefully after it comes out in the US there'd be a couple more
. Willfully punishing early adopters? or neglectfully too pre-occupied to think of keeping the customers happy? Have you tried asking Michelle C, Mr. N?
I've checked with my contacts, but noone is going. Its a shame that WowWee didn't sponsor attendance by some of the community, that could have given a big kick-start to it. Oh well, still 48 hours to register!
