News from a Parallax Universe

An interview with our very own RobosapienV2-4mem8 is featured in today's Parallaxian Newsletter. Parallax is perhaps best known for the hugely popular BASIC Stamp, a low cost microcontroller with embedded Basic interpreter. Parallax is also the maker of the BOE-bot which is a handy off-the-shelf platform for robotic education and experimentation.

Coming out Really Soon (March 2008) is the QuadRover robot platform, powered by a 4-stroke gasoline (petrol) engine and hydraulic drives. The QuadRover is controlled by the Propellor microcontroller, which is an 8x CPU 32 bit core microcontroller. Each core or 'cog' runs at 20 MIPS, allowing superfast parallel processing in a small, hobbyist-friendly package.

I have used the Prop Proto Board to do experiments with a Robosapien V2 camera. While the V2 camera looks at test patterns on my computer screen (secondary LCD display), the Prop reads the memory of the camera controller chip, and simultaneously displays the data as hex code on an NTSC video monitor and transmits the data via USB to my laptop. I'd be happy to share more info on this set of experiments if anyone is interested, but to put it simply, there is no evidence that any detailed image data is being stored in the V2 camera controller. The image data from the CMOS camera sensor appears to be analysed and 'parsed' as it is being read, such that the camera controller is only aware of a 3 x 3 array of color blocks. It is able to track objects by noting which of the blocks change color value, but does not percieve any detail of shapes or shading.

One last note, the $25 Prop Plug USB to 3.3V serial adapter, that is used to connect the Prop Proto Board to your PC, is also extremely simple to use as an interface to the RS Media serial console port. More on that in an upcoming Hacks & Mods blog post!

'til then, Adios!

Milw: I see that it did not take you long to spot my interview with Parallax, They contacted me after I suggested they do a spotlight on customers as well as their employee's, So it was nice to be asked to write a spurge on what I do. I have bought a number of Parallax products over the years and looking forward to their new lines this year.

OBTW Milw: Nice reading your blogs.

Heh! It took me a minute, but the mention of wood turning, salt and pepper shakers, boats and robots could only be one person on this planet! That was a great idea of yours and I'm glad they took you up on it, the personal touch is one reason why I like getting the Parallax newsletter. Oh and BTW I was looking on your own website http://robosapienv2-4mem8.page.tl/ and enjoyed your bit about the gaming PC- did you take any pictures with the LED displays going? Tried the chat too but no-one was home! When are you available for chats?

cheers- Scott

That was a great interview!  And, now that you mention the gaming PC, I was looking at it yesterday as well.  Very, very awesome.  I especially love the plexi case - I think I subconsciously decided to do my next PC that way as well.  Great stuff, thanks to both of you :)

Milw: Thanks Milw, I also like the personal touch every month with the news letter. As for the LED and laser light show on my gaming PC! I could make a video and show it that way as a photo would not do ot justice, Let me know if you guys would be interested.

As for the chat I quite often have it on but no one is in the mood usually around 7-11pm and between 6-7am weekdays 7-10 weekends NZ time if that helps.

Peter: Thanks Peter, The perspex U/V case was a challenge and real neat project. It has two lightbus controllers controlling two yellow, two white, two red lava and 6 U/v tubes as well as 4 laser lights, The controllers also opperate the HDD light as well as 4 fans. And oh meters of U/V tubing. The coolest part is the mini LCD screen which informs you what the title of the game is when inserted into the dvdor CD player. It's called ALPHACOOL. Google it. http://www.thecoolingshop.com/product_info.php/products_id/2190

Would anyone like a video of the laser light show on this PC???? In fact would anyone like an article on the build of this PC????

Alphcool LCD screen, has many many other features. This is displaying my internals of my workstation, After I checked to see if it was working ok it was transfered to my gaming PC with much higher specs.
