WowWee Robots: A Holiday Gift ReviewPosted by Peter Redmer on Tuesday, 16 December 2008
Yup, it's almost that time... only about a week until the ugly reindeer sweaters come out, your Aunt Hermilda pinches your cheek in front of your whole family, and the wrapping paper flies around the living room almost as feverishly as the blizzard rages outside.
And, I'm guessing, you probably don't have all of your shopping done yet. I can make a second guess too - that someone left on your list would love to get a WowWee robot for the holidays.
The conundrum here is that unless you're a whole lot wealthier than I am (i.e., burning Benjamins in your fireplace) you can't buy EVERY robot for EVERYONE on your list. If you could, they'd be some lucky folks. So, I figured I'd give some advice on which WowWee robot to pick up for that special someone.
Please note that we love all WowWee bots, but couldn't possibly list them all here - if you have any questions about a robot not on this list, please post a comment or to the public forums!
The Rovio is simply awesome. For under $300, you can have a mobile robot webcam in your house... how cool is that? You can set up the Rovio to work from only inside your home, or go through a more detailed setup to enable it to be accessed and controlled from ANYWHERE over the Internet.
Given the Rovio's special focus, it's heavy focus on new technology and evolving software, and great opportunities for hacks and mods - this roving wonder is perfect for the computer or technology geek. Of course, you know one, I'm sure!
We all fondly remember that age... when we loved to terrorize our little sister (or brother) with whatever was close at hand, loved to play games all day long, and especially... make obnoxious noises! For the mischievous child in your life (or adult, in my case) Tri-bot makes a perfect companion.
He's got a "new robot" personality that's full of life and energy. You can let him roam freely, play a variety of different games with him, or even pounce on unsuspecting victims with his Alarm feature.
If you think model airplanes and helicopters are a dying hobby, only to be replaced by professional World of Warcraft and Cheeto speed-eating... think again. Flying toys and models are hotter than ever, and WowWee has a few technologically impressive and super-fun models of their own, that are sure to please any model pilot.
First, we've got the Dragonfly - a classic WowWee flying toy. The FlyTech Dragonfly flaps its wings like a real insect and is simply a blast to fly (outside is best.) It's simple enough to pick up and get started immediately, even if you're a novice - but provides enough control for advanced flight. Even better - the Dragonfly is a huge bargain this year!
We also have the FlyTech Bladestar - a new "spin" on helicopter flight. Bladestar can hover and fly autonomously around the room, employing sensors to ensure it does not hit ceilings or walls. If you wish, you can also take direct control of Bladestar. If you know anyone who's looking for a fun flying toy to use inside the home, Bladestar makes a perfect gift.
RS Media is one of the most robust robotic toys out there, offering multitudes of customization and learning opportunities. The RS Media has been used in education around the world, including Carnegie Mellon University, to teach Java programming and also about robotics. In addition, RS Media can be tailored to your individual taste by installing different personalities, ranging from cartoon characters to movie stars. As such, the RS Media is absolutely perfect for the aspiring programmer, engineer, scientist, or amateur roboticist.
I don't know about you, but most of the girls I've known in my life love fairies, and especially Disney's Tinkerbell. WowWee obviously knew this too, and created the unique FlyTech FairyFly and Tinkerbell flying toys.
Easy to charge and get flying, these beautiful sprites circle and dance through the air with ease, and their speed and height can be controlled with the included remote - which also doubles as a display stand. Bring some magic into her life with FlyTech!
For The Animal Lover: The Alive Cubs
When I was a kid, I wasn't much into cuddly things. I was more the Transformer and Nintendo type of kid, but my sister loved her plush animals. To this day, stuffed creatures make a great gift for her and many other people I know. Whether you're a young child who loves animals, or a full-grown kid at heart, the Alive Cubs are adorable and collectable.
Available in four varieties (Polar Bear Cub, Lion Cub, White Tiger Cub, and Panda Cub) the Alive Cubs react to your touch with realistic sounds and movements. They're designed to look as real as possible and are very high quality - sure to be enjoyed by anyone who loves cute creatures!
Ready to go shopping?
I hope this guide helps you pick a WowWee robot for the robot lover in your life.
