WowWee Robosapien Turned Cylon - How To Make Your Own

I bought one of the chrome Robosapiens, and thought, "Hey this would make a cool Cylon!".

Robosapien V1 as Robo-Cylon (70's photoshoot edition!)

Robosapien Cylon Hack Mod Project

The circuit used to make the Cylon Eye can be found here on the Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories website.

Its fairly straight forward to mod this for use in an RSV1. The original design uses one circuit to create the eye, I split it into 3 parts for ease of fitting. Theres the Timer circuit, the low pass driver circuit and the LED circuit:

The Timer and Driver circuit were fitted into the chest cavity.

Opening the head itself was the trickiest part as the rear panel of the head is glued in place. For me, trying to open the head resulted in lots of chips and scratches, fortunately none of the chrome was damaged and only a black permanent marker was needed to clean up the rest. You need to remove the original eyes and rewire the IR sensor in the top. The RED, BLACK and WHITE wires from the IR go to the GREY, BLACK and WHITE cables that run to the original eye circuit.

The power for the circuit is drawn from the VCC and GND connections on the main circuit board on the back of the robot. To do this you would need to solder two wires from these connections to the positive and ground on the main timer circuit.

Pictures showing the power wiring from the main RS cuircuit board and the taped up visor (Notice how I didnt quite get the tape to match up in the middle? It was tricky!!)

The visor for the RS was made using black and red electrical tape to give the V shape. This was also quite tricky as I opted to place the tape on the inside of the visor, however you could cheat and simply place the tape on the outside. But hey, you have the head apart already right?

I haven't put the original eye circuit anywhere yet, but i'm planning on embedding them in the chest with a new mod.

Anyway, hope you like the mod, be nice to see a few more Robo-Cylons out there!

Nice work!

in the video it does look like the led are in the shape of the V but in the picture of the LED board they are running in a line. Which is it, a v shaped board or the line led board giving the illusion of sliding up and down the V slot?

If you read the article, you will notice that the LED's are in a straight line, and black tape with a V cut out was used to give the illusion of a V shape.

oops I scanned the article and was remembering what was said in the thread, The illision is great because it does look like the leds were in a V shape. Also I almost made the mistake by asking for the circuit diagram until I see it in the top of the article bt this one got by me. Thanks N. for looking out for me.hehehe

Cheers for the kind comments, yeah the V is actually a straight line of LEDs. I had intended to make it straight, it wasnt until I was messing with the tape that I decided to go for the V, looks better, and the illusion does work well.
